Meh, they're okay. Heavy pulling exercises are better. I like behind the back curls with the easy bar, BTB finger curls, one of those things that uses a cord/rope that you roll up the weight with, heavy deads, reverse grip easy bar curls and farmer's walks. I only use grippers when I'm bored or driving.

i used to take 2 10 lb dumbells and turn them in so i gripped the smooth flat surface and would hold them until i couldnt anymore, works the forearms nicely. Also wrist curls and like said above, heavy pulling exercises (DL's) will work them fine

exercises at the gym don't work the same as good quality grippers. if you buy captains of crush or similar grippers you will be humbled the first time you try to squeeze a #2 or maybe even the #1 gripper.
for forearm size, i never found grippers to do much. they work great for gripping strength only (imo)
if you want size, do wrist curls or a wrist roller would be even better.
