I’d classify myself as an alcoholic. I’ve denied it for along time because I don’t fit into the homeless need a drink in the morning type. I’ve been an alcoholic since I’ve touched the stuff. I binge drink twice a week. At least 15-20 beers in each section. For the last 10 years. I know it’ll catch up with me.

Some folks will purposefully abstain from alcohol one month per year (Sober October is a popular one just before the holidays). If you can't do without alcohol for a month, then I'd say you're addicted.

As for me, I've spent about half my adult life drinking similar to you and I've spent the other half sober. NO COMPARISON for me: sobriety wins. Better health and fewer arguments with my wife.

Just because it's your normal now, that doesn't mean you have to live this way for the next several decades.

I’ve quit for a month here and there in the winter only. It’s not hard to abstain when it’s 10 below zero. But when summer and the heat kick in, then it’s balls to the wall. Living in a small resort town it seems like it’s the norm. Lots of retired guys wondering around with beer guts playing golf. Wondering if anyone beat this by moving somewhere with a different set of values? Where alcohol wasn’t the main focus in every outing.

I don't know. Maybe, but you can't outrun YOU. As for me, I enjoyed drinking so much, that it wouldn't have mattered to me where I lived . . . as long as there was a liquor store nearby to sell me beer.

It affects a lot of your body's hormones, and sleep, which affects test.

Get a blood test to confirm where you're at if you're concerned, they are cheap.

This is something that my uncle told me about 7 years ago before he died.
He was a long term drinker/alcoholic and died of Throat Cancer which he attributed to his alcoholism over 30+ years.
Hopefully this information helps someone here, hopefully.

Found this recently. Just finished reading it after trying to work out how to handle a conflict in my home group. It’s long

Idk if anyone will read it. I found it very interesting

“ COMMUNAL INDIVIDUALISM: MANAGING CONFLICT IN ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS
    by
    HEATH CARTER HOFFMANN
(Under the direction of Dr. Mark Cooney) ABSTRACT
This study explores how members of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) manage conflict in the context of the AA meeting. AA is a unique organization because it lacks an institutionalized authority structure and thus does not have formal organizational mechanisms (e.g. a leader or manager) for responding to and mediating interpersonal conflicts between members. In the absence of formal authority structure, we might expect conflict to be rampant in AA. However, this is not the case. Certainly, as in other social contexts, AA members experience interpersonal and intra-personal conflicts during meetings, which they manage by using strategies like avoidance, tolerance, criticism, humor, therapy, and in rare cases members ask for help from the police. To explain variations in how members respond to deviant behavior I use Donald Black’s (1993) general theory of conflict management. Black suggests that conflict management varies with the social structure of the group or organization. The social structure of a setting embodies the configuration of statuses and social ties that participants share. In the case of AA, its members are relatively egalitarian and groups tend to be internally homogeneous producing a social structure that encourages the use of therapy and tolerance to manage conflict. However, more authoritative conflict management strategies such as criticism and law are used in social structures where the deviant member occupies a lower status in the group (i.e. has not been sober for very long) and has weak or infrequent ties to the AA program. In the same way, deviance by high status members is frequently tolerated by lower status members and only authoritatively challenged, if at all, by other high status members. This work contributes to the development of Black’s theoretical paradigm and also illustrates the importance of equality and egalitarianism in creating a therapeutic milieu.

I'm about 2 months into recovery from a pretty bad drinking problem.

Most of my life (outside of my teen years) I rarely, if ever, drank alcohol. My dad was a severe alcoholic, and I never wanted to be like that. When my relationship fell apart with my kids mother I was left to raise two boys all alone. My ex was getting really bad into drugs, and it caused our relationship to fall apart. She faded out of our kids lives to the point she might see them once every 2-3 years.

I stayed single for about 5 years, and during those years I filled in my loneliness with alcohol. I was very functional, and only drank at home after my kids went to bed.

3 years ago I met my wife. She was just getting out of a very bad marriage, and drank almost as much as I did. But when we drank together we had TONS of fun. Fast forward to the beginning of this summer, and we both realized that our drinking is getting out of hand. All those fun times started turning into big arguments. We knew something had to happen or else our marriage probably wouldn't last. We decided that instead of drinking every night that we would only drink Friday and Saturday nights. Well that lasted until about Christmas when we realized that we didn't even look forward to Friday or Saturday drinking, so we decided to just stop.

I don't really miss it at all, but I do get cravings. Especially when I'm feeling stressed.
