Is sprinting a good leg exercise?

I'm quite a good sprinter, and I want to work more on it. I work each bodypart twice a week, as I think this suits me best, but it doesn't leave me with day where my legs are really 100%

Would it be OK if I replaced on of my leg days by a day to work more on my sprinting?

Is running actually beneficial in any way to muscle mass, strength etc?

    Thanks!

If your goal is to gain mass on your lower body, you will need to lift weights. I know plenty of people who are too afraid to lift legs...they all tell me that they "sprint to gain mass".

    They all have baby legs.

If you want to keep sprinting, then by all means replace a leg workout with sprinting. I'd imagine it would be hard to work the lower body twice a week and still make progress in something like sprinting.

But obviously, sprinting will not be very effective for bodybuilding, so I wouldn't call it a 'good leg exercise.'

I'm not going to drop squats or anything, I'm just going to do legs once a week as opposed to twice, so that I can work on getting quicker, because I get the impression I'm not as quick as I was before.

    Depends on goals....

Is your goal to improve your sprint times or to get heyuge legs?

Resistance training is going to play an important, but different role in either case.

Well the best sprinters aren't bodybuilders, and bodybuilders aren't the best sprinters.

Sprinters use weights to develop strength and explosiveness, bodybuilders are looking for size. Different frequencies, intensities, and volumes are going to be needed by the two groups.

Sprinters train for performance and attain size as a consequence, not as a goal.

yes you will gain mass the only people who lose mass are long distances runners... the reason for that is becuase carrying the extra muscle on their body makes them use more energy during their race which is why you never see juge distance runners.

have you thought about joining the track team at school?if so what events

Good sprinters do their fair share of strength work (i.e. they use weights too).

top level sprinters are masses of muscle. so, inherently, sprinting is not bad for muscle gain. how much weight training they do, though, i don't know. i'd suspect they do a fair share.

i think it's a great idea, and would hope that you follow this up over time and let us know???

Sprinters don't gain mass from their plyometric work, if anything plyometrics will make you leaner. The majority of them include heavy compound exercises into their regime. Also remember at the elite level athletes have great genetics for that specific activity that they doing.

I think a really important thing to know is how your progression has been going in squats and deads, what your current strength levels are, and what your program is like. I'll just say this, if you have easy strength gains to make, or could still be considered a novice strength trainee, then I would try to incorporate both squatting 2x a week and sprinting. The foundation of strength should help your sprinting in the long run, although it might temporarily make you slower. And if you're a novice, you recover quickly anyway, so the fatigue should be minimal. I'd like to see your program though, as I suspect it could be tweaked to allow for better recovery.

Don't take the term novice as negative. For instance, I've been doing Starting Strength and have used the linear progression up to 3x5x280 on squats and 5x340 on deadlifts. I've been able to recover in 2-3 days and add more weight and get the same number of reps, for quite some time. I'm just barely no longer a novice, now that I've stalled on my squats. Some minor changes to the format of my squatting programming and I'll be able to continue my progress.

Don't overdo it on the sprinting though. Quality and being relatively fresh is more important than volume. I'll see if I can dig something up, I've seen some good secondhand info.
