You hold a heavy apparatus in each hand and attempt to walk a set distance as fast as possible.
Its great for improving grip strength as well as endurance and full-body strength. Some people use dumbells, but this seems ot be harder on the wrists. If your gym has any of those tricep bars w/ the parallel handles, you can use them. Or you can build some sort of apparatus.--Zack

Yes, but why not walk fast? Get more of a workout that way. Also, the Farmers walk originated (i think) as a strongman event. They walk fast. That is the whole point of it as an event.
But of course you'd want to go fast as possible to get farther.

No, in most competitions, they go a set distance, and the goal is to do it the fastest. They are judged by time. In fact, in most competition (including WSM), if you drop the weights, you can pick them up and keep going. While some events are specifically for distance (hussafel stone, conan's wheel, shield carry), the farmers walk is specifically a speed event.
Yes. It works just about everything.19 years old, 6', 210lbs (11%bf)

I believe there are some specialized farmer's walk implements available through weight-supply houses.
