Thumbs up OT: Biggest bb.com myths of all time

Here's some of the lingering myths I've noticed here since 2002.

    Size always correlates to strength

There is a "best" exercise for every muscle group

    Squat for big arms

Squats release uber loads of gh

The body wants to stay in proportion.......you can't have big(insert bodypart here) without also working (insert here bodypart)

Db is superior to to bb for chest gains

Flat bench works the entire chest

Freeweights are always better than machines for size gains

Working out more than 3 times a week is overtraining

Rippetoes and 5 by 5 are the ultimate basic routines for young aspiring bodybuilders

Behind the neck presses will rip your shoulders apart

Upright rows cause horrible impingement in all lifters who perform them

You don't need to work your muscles from various angles for optimal growth

The nuances of grip mean nothing

    Straps impede forearm growth

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Everyone feel free to chime in with the bs bb.com myths they've noticed over their time here. And it doesn't have to be just in terms of exercises.

You can include myths from the supp sections, workout programs, and workout equipment sections as well.

    Wink

    curls will give you girls

    big arm big pay

    ladies love squat butt

    skullcrushers crush your skull

watching instructional videos is better than trying to perform the lift by yourself

olympic lifts makes you explosive in fights

    powerlifting makes you slow

bodybuilding is all show no go

no such thing as inner chest

    soreness means nothing

doesn't matter what you eat, as long as you eat alot

when an exercise doesn't work, it's your diet/should do it more often/not using enough weight

    everything is genetics

the body works as a whole so weak points get fixed by compounds

skinny guys should eat fast food

programs and intensity don't matter, it's all in the diet

more height makes you a better bodybuilder

water isn't important, you piss it all anyways

can't lose fat and gain muscle at the same time

it's not true if it's not in a book

    the majority is always right

there's only one right true way to train

I agree with most of your myths but not this one. Multi-angular training is definitely not necessary for massive growth. In olympic lifting and powerlifting, there is no such thing as muti-angular training. They focus on the lifts they do in competition along with only a few assistance exercises. Yet they are HUGE! If you do the major lifts, you will train every muscle in your body to the max. Also, guys from the NFL or professional fighters. They simply can't waste time doing tons of exercises for all the various angles. They have to spend a lot of time for sport specific training so they only pick a small number of very effective weight training exercises and do them hard. There are also a lot of big guys there.

Eat as much protein as possible. It won't be stored as fat.
If you gain 30lbs of muscle in 3 months most of its muscle.
If you take steriods you can be a pro.

low reps to build mass and strength, high reps for definition!

then if we feel the need to break this rule/myth down further, we can chart the exact number of reps required for strength, mass, and definition.

    (post rippetoe chart here)

You need to find the exercise that will hit "inner upper chest" best.
    Walking is not cardio.
Stand absolutely still when curling otherwise your gains are minimal.

Fighters also do a lot of "workouts" that work all the muscles... Like "rolling" which is Jiu Jitsu, and you are constantly moving, meaning you are doing everything from different angles. Meaning yes, they are definitely training multi-angular. So that comment was extremely dumb. Same with wrestling, judo, and even stand up work.

That you need ridiculously high amounts of protein - 2g for every lb of bodyweight.

Lower weight with stricter form is objectively best.

Expensive suppliments can and should just be plunged into.

Got any proof that first one is a myth? I'm not trying to bait you, just genuinely interested.

And Starting Strength is an awesome start for anyone who wants to take up lifting weights, regardless of whether they want to become a bodybuilder or a powerlifter. Maybe it's not "ultimate", but it's damned good. I say a bigger myth is that "cookie cutter" (God I hate that phrase, but it gets thrown around here a fair bit) routines don't work, that everyone needs a specially catered routine from the moment they first start training.

Actually that chart refers to strength, power and sarcoplasmic and myofibrillar hypertrophy, not mass and strength vs. definition.

ie. you will look like a pro if you take it
ie. you will go on a rampage and kill everyone
ie. you will commit suicide if you take it.

The muscular work that you do in fighting uses the entire body. In other words, they are compound movements. That is not the same thing as the multi-angular work associated with bodybuilding like trying to train the high triceps and bicep peak and so forth. I've trained in martial arts and boxing for the past 24 years and I think I might know a thing or two about fight training. No fighter I've ever trained with or seen does so-called muti-angular work with weights. They do some well-picked compound exercises and the rest of the time is spent doing sport specific training like shadowboxing, bag work, sparring, etc. So by your statement, you're saying that they get their multi-angular work from their sport specific training which is what I already stated.

If this is a myth then the resulting conclusions are either that practicing olympic lifts will make you less explosive, or have no impact on your ability to rapidly exert force.

You think either of those is the case?

    Thumbs up MOAR myths............

    Smith machines are useless

You can't emphasize various parts of a muscle

    Science > experience

Compounds are all that's needed for a solid physique

Peanut butter is good for you

High volume with lighter weight is better while cutting

low reps is better than high reps for building mass

Deads and squats are a MUST in any solid lifting routines

Flat barbell bench is a essential part of any chest building routine

You can't build a good back without deadlifts

You can't widen/stretch you ribcage using pullovers
