    Who has Recovered from Costochondritis

    inflamation of the cartilage that connects the ribcage/breastbone

    I know for sure people have had this before so please speak up...I'm sure there will be some chronic cases where it took a while to heal, but anybody been able to fully recover and go back to the gym within a relatively short amount of time?

    I've just got this injury and so far its been pretty mild with some occasional bouts of manageable pain...just wondering what I can potentially expect. Any insight would ne GREATLY appreciated.

    chostochondritis

    i just actualy just got a case of it, so far its been 2 weeks but yep pretty much feels like a heart attack along with pain radiating to my scap/spine. kinda like a knofe through me, i am on celebrex , 600 motrin and some muscle relaxers to sleep because the pain wakes me, i have no clue how long its gonna bother me for tho

    I had this condition for over three months before I knew exactly what the hell it was. I tore my chest muscle, and then some how from that point on, I had costo. I did physical therapy-failed. I stretched-failed. The only thing that temporarily helped was getting cortizone injections in my sternum. That helped a lot, and then it started to hurt a little bit. After months of waiting, I decided to stop caring and lift since I had lost over 20 pounds of muscle from sitting on my ass. Turns out push ups and the cortizone injections got rid of it. Here is my guess on the reason. I think that costochondritis is something that should be handled with a doctor first. I recommend the cortizone injections. If that doesnt work, it could be that the muscles you haven't been using have now shrank and tightened. This shrinking and tightening can pull on your sternum and cause pain and inflammation. The only way I saw was to losen them by push ups. Everyone is different, but that is my case. Hopefully it helps and good luck to you. I have pulled my chest muscle again and I'm not sure if its just inflammation or still injured, so a description of the costochondritis pain would be nice?

    I think I have had a costochondritis for 3 months now - don't recall doing anything to cause it.
    Thing is it does not hurt if I press and push on the chest, only when breathing deep and moving certain ways. Anyone else's like that?
    I hope it is not the lung.
    Yes I have seen two docs, one for a second opinion. They do not think it is the lung.
    I too am sick of not working out and have lost serious muscle pounds.
    I am thinking to start back in with any body parts I can do without stressing the upper chest area.
    Forearms, MAYBE biceps.
    I think chest shoulder and tris are out.
    Maybe leg exercises but not squats because it would stress the area to hold the barbell up on the shoulders.

    I got a question for you guys.

    I'm not sure if I have costochondritis but my symptoms match those of costochondritis. For me it came out of nowhere and it began when I was laying in bed. Now I can work out without pain, but I have been experiencing pain at random times.

    Does this happen to you guys? Or do certain things cause your pain?

    I have a similar problem. But mine started with a weird twitching sensation on my upper abs, and lower rib/pec area on the right side. It started while I was in the gym after some heavy lifting, I think it may have been the weighted dips I did. But it was scary, felt like it was coming from inside. No pain, just real uncomfortable feeling.

    After a few weeks of not training, the twitching lightened up, not sure what triggers it, just happens randomly. But happens more if I try to train.

    Anyway, started feeling around my rib and noticed what felt like a muscle knot around where my 4th (or 5th) rib meets the sternum, it was a bit tender and I tried to massage it out. Next day, I made an appointment with my chiropractor, he noticed the problem straight away, also the rib was slightly raised. But the real problem wasnt at the front. Where that rib meets the spine at the back, it was actually twisted from there coupled with a muscle spasm.

    Symptoms have lightened up, but I am getting frustrated being out of the gym.

    Apparently Noni juice is supposedly good for this condition. My dad drinks it all the time, so I'll give it a shot.

    So there's nothing a chiropractor can do?

    Right now laughing or caughing sometimes causes the pain to come back. It will start out in my ribs on the left side then move to my sternum. It's getting frustrating.

    Well, I don't know yet, I've only had one session on monday. Due to see him again next week. I'll have to wait and see if it helps.

    But its certainly worth getting someone to check it out to see if there are any underlying trigger points, knots, spasms, disk misalignment, rib dysfunctions etc.

    Hi,
    I'm a pro boxer, and was diagnosed with costochondritis 6 months ago.

    I was doing very heavy (for me) pec deck, and felt a big discomfort in my sternum. Ever since, it hurts too much to any training at all. I can't even throw punches, and the funny (?) thing is, it hurts worst when I sneeze. My nose is crooked from being broken a couple of times, so I sneeze like 5-8 times a day (wierd that I know that, but the pain keeps me counting them).

    Boxing is my life, and I'm seriously considering injecting pain killers in my chest, and hitting the gym again.

    I've had costo for almost 2 years and i've tried just about everything to get rid of it. Glucosamine/Chondroiten Sulfate will eas the pain more than anything. Some people have gotten rid of it using homeopathy. The best advise I can give you is to keep seeing your doctor about it until he finds a way to get rid of it. To end the pain permenantly your going to need to find the underlying cause.

    Here is a quote from a chronic pain specialist named Jacob Tietalbaum:
    "Interestingly, muscle pain over the lower half of the chest bone (sternum) is involved in a reflex arc that can both cause and be caused by acid reflux."

    So he says treat the undrlying muscle pain for releif, and he's treated thousands of chronic pain paitents.

    Also the only known cause so far for chronic costochondritis (Tietz's syndrome) is chronic bracing of the intercostal muscles. So I'm thinking that loosining up all of the chest muscles with maybe stretches, heat, or muscle relaxnts could solve the problem.

    Oh, god this one was miserable. I believe I had it almost a year. I would wait a month it would came back, waited about 2 months, it came back again...I think eventually just started training with the pain. Obviously when that didn't go well I switched the training to avoid dips and decline especially, certain types of lat pulls. It just eventually faded away. Honestly I think I may have even started back up on dips and decline when it was there and it still went away. The entire experience was incredibly weird/frustrating. I had been getting injections into the sternum that didn't work, physical therapy didn't work, but for some reason it just faded away.

    how soon after working out did the symptoms come up? the reason I ask is because I did weighted dips yesterday and I started having similar symptoms tonight, so I'm just curious if its possible for the inflammation to be delayed by almost a day?

    If you strain the area I hear it can be 1-2 years for recovery. If it is a fracture usually 6-9 months. I recommend you stretch your pecs frequently either way.

    I have had chostorchrondrites diagnosed by MRI. It did take a while to heal. But ithink lifting helped. I just made sure I did not bounce the bar on my chest. Take motrin to reduce inflamation. And your fish oils and such. Play with it as least as possible too. Mine eventually went away.

    I see that this forum has been visited primarily by men, but I am a female bodybuilder with costochondritis and am looking for support / advice.
    I developed costo after doing heavy dumbell shoulder presses two months ago. I took off for a month and it seemed that I had recovered 100%. I started lifting again 4 weeks ago, and last week it came back. It's not quite as bad as before but it's still annoying. I definitely can't do dips and even cable row irritates it on the eccentric or negative part of the movement. I decided screw it and I'm going to keep lifing anyway. I read that you had continued on as well. Did you lift THROUGH the pain or did it only hurt when you did certain lifts and thus you avoided those. How long did yours take to go away? Do you think the fish oil helped? Also, did you feel pain in you upper back between you shoulder blades as well?

    Hi, I have what my doctor thinks is a form of Costochrondritis. I have had it now for 5 1/2 weeks. Just woke up one day and it was there. The pain is where my rib joins my sternum on the right hand side and I also feel it a bit in the shoulder blade. I think I may have got this because stupidly I was balancing the weights bar on my chest while bench pressing. At one point the pain was such that I found it hard to take deep breaths.
    It can also be very painful and tender when pressing on the area where my rib joins the sternum over my right pec muscle. Almost feels like your pressing a bruise.
    I went to my chiropractor yesterday and she cracked my right shoulder about but when she pressed my rib on my pec muscle it was agony.
    I dont think you should poke it about as I dont think this helps also I find Ibuprophen helps a abit.
    Wondering the same thing as liztrainer has asked and if anybody in this thread has gotten over this and is back in the gym or if its possible to train through this as kruze414 said.

    I had this after I first started Judo and started falling on a regular basis. It sucks. In fact, it hurt and was surprising to me so much that at one point I thought I might be having some kind of negative cardiac event.

    My doc diagnosed it...but the only treatment was ibuprofen and rest. At its peak working out was not at all possible, i would be close to tears after a throw or practicing a pin. Even jogging hurt. pushups were impossible.

    I took a month of complete rest, and then after another month of working out light the pain slowly went away completely and has not come back for 3 years. Thank god!

    If you have it and are considering working out through it, more power to you. I just took the opportunity to catch up on some xbox playing.

    Glad you have got over it mate. You seem to have recovered fairly fast from this. Can I just ask how you knew it was the right moment to resume training with weights? Did you still have any residing pain when you restarted.

    For me its now been 6 weeks. I have been resting it for this entire period and havent done any lifting at all. I can do a pressup but it does really ache. I also still feel it when I take in a big breath. Its worse when im sitting at my pc.

    I think im also getting fairly bored from not doing anything and its playing on my mind,

    Posture has a lot to do with the sensitivity. A real good technique for stretching is to do it in the shower and let the shower head pulse on the area of soreness for 30 seconds while stretching and repeat this 3-7x and note if the sensitivity decreases. Then report back and we will take this healing to the next step...OK?

    I have used the warm water form the shower head on the sore area, it seems to relax the area. Stretching the area still brings the same sharp pain.
    Seems as though it feels like the inflammation maybe gradually going (probably as ive done no excersise for 6 1/2 weeks) but the sharp pain is still there where rib joins sternum.
    I also notice a slight clicking noise in the tender area when I move my right arm foward.
    The breathing pain smtimes feels like its easing up a bit then comes back but I dont want to pick up the weights just yet incase I go back to square one.

    I found this article. This might relate to having heavy objects press or fall on your chest or from certain types of movement. I have noticed the audible clicking alhough im not sure if this is the cause of the pain or not.

    Fracture of the front section of the ribs (the costal cartilage) is a rare cause of chest pain in athletes, caused by sudden forceful contraction of the external oblique muscles, which may lead to an audible clicking. Tenderness is localised over the costal margin and diagnosis is confirmed by CT. In recalcitrant cases surgery may be needed"

    Anyone still reading this thread? I found out I have Costochondritis. It has been about 3 weeks. I tried to work through it for about a week and a half but it was way too painful. I have not touched a weight since. I am really looking forward to getting back into the gym but know I have to rest.

    Controlled Labs Orange Triad seems to be helping. It has MSM, glucosamine and chondriotin in it. Also, I am going to try out some yoga. I'll let you know how that goes. 2 aleve before bed is the only way I sleep through the night now. I hope and pray this heals soon! At least I have my little Dyna-Flex ball. My forearms are going to be jacked! haha

    I began to experience this when I started doing weighted dips. I took 3 weeks off, and stopped going so low during dips. Problem solved... For me that is.

    ive taken like 2 months off from lifting im swelling up like a cow yo and i cant do much cause my chest starts hurting bad after the doctor told me i had the costochondritis he put me on this "profile" in the army it restricts ur exersise.... followed it and im still having the pain i started working out again really light and it still hurts is their anyone out their in the military with the same problem?

    There is no absolute cause for CostoChondritis. I know that sounds crazy, but verdict is still out as to why it all of a sudden shows up. Rest is the primary cure, in all cases ( 4 to 5) we've seen with our clients, it 100% goes away in time. Not to be taken lightly though as other more serious conditions produce the same symptoms. Stick to your physician and follow the recommendations. Here's a nice read on costochondritis with some good information. Good luck and god's speed in recovering.

    About two weeks ago, I realized my heart was beating faster after doing little things. I routinely take the stairs up to the 11th floor at my job, and I noticed that my heart was pounding after the 5th floor. Then last week, I had to run one block to catch the bus, and my heartrate was near 150 for almost 5 minutes. Generally, I do cardio for 45min/day at around 150bpm, so I knew this was odd. My resting heartrate is around 63bpm, and in the last couple of weeks has hovered near 80.

    For some reason, I ignored it until new year's weekend, when I started getting sharp pains in my left chest. While out at the club with friends Friday night, the pain got worse and I couldn't take deep breaths. I left the club and went to the ER at the VA hospital. Nothing showed up on EKG/Rapid Heart Test so they gave me some metroprolol and said see my primary doc. Inbetween FRI night and MON morning, my heart would race for no reason and the pains were getting worse. Even small things like lifting a bag of grapfruit gave me pain and a rapid heartbeat.

    I went to my doctor yesterday and he thinks I have chostochondritis. He gave me an anti-inflammatory (Meloxicam) and it's helped immensely. I don't feel my heart bumping against my (inflamed) ribcage anymore and I can take a brisk walk without feeling like I'm at death's doorstep.

    Hmm, this post got long, but I wanted to relay my experiences for anyone else who looked up this topic like I did. After the doctor mentioned costochondritis and sternum damage, I remembered this pain did begin after I upped the weight on my incline bench presses and was having trouble with my form. Weight lifting is still out of the question for a while, but I'm so glad the meds have allowed me to do at least a little movement.

    Through my experience I have found that if you have an injury to the cartilige in this area the associated Costochondritis/inflammation that comes with the injury takes about a year to go away. You might feel alot better at this point but if you have an underlying injury that caused the costochondritis/inflammation you have to give it another year or so to heal or it could come back.
    The key is to get rid of the inflammation so your body can then heal properly.

    I have had this pain since oct 09. It gradually got better but I think I went back to soon and it came back. I have tried a steroid injection but didnt work. I also have a very slight clicking sensation when I press the area. I assume there is some damage there causing the inflammation.

    I am trying to reduce the inflammation with ibuprophen and take Glucosamine/Chronduitin/Msm liquid to build the cartilige.

    I met sombody once who had a similar injury which took 2 1/2 years to go away. They recommended bed rest and what was mentioned above.

    I really hope everybody gets better soon.

    Airwave so you still have these dull pains in the chest?

    How are you managing your training around it, I ask as I've had these pains for about 6months now and I havent been to the gym at all in that time. However I wish to go back as i've lost so much size.

    Any tips?

    ochen sorry to see you have this also. I understand your fustration I feel the same. Yeah still get the dull pain on the right side of my sternum. I have tried going back using lighter weights but the inflammation came back and spread. The only thing I can do right now is some light jogging and stretching. If I press the area sometimes it clicks at the injury site. Maybe there is some fibers comes loose from the sternum I dont know.

    I wouldnt try and train around it but its up to you. If you have the patience just wait for the inflammation to go away then see how you feel. The main thing is to isolate the pain and not let it spread and get as much rest as you can. Eventually when you do start feeling better start by doing a couple pressups and build up very slowly until you have strength in that area.

    I can only imagine the better quality rest you get the better the outcome. Keep us updated ochen.
