My butt gets sore from squats and I go to parallel or slightly below. You might also try "glute raises".

What exercises works best for firmer glutes?

Strong glutes are crucial for proper pelvic alignment, propulsion during walking and running, and even standing on one leg. A strong butt also supports the lower back during lifting and helps prevent knee injuries.

Some of the best glute exercises are i) Barbell Deadlift, ii) Barbell Hip Thrust, iii) Wide Step Reverse Lunge, iv) Cable Pull Through, and v) Single-Leg Glute Bridges.

Check out the best compound glute exercises here - go CrazyAthlete[dot]com and search glute exercises and you'll be good to go.
