The squatting in running shoes isn't as bad as it used to be because running shoes are made with more lateral support than they were 10-15 years ago. People with wide feet have trouble staying on the soles, especilly if they squat wide. 20 years ago, I actualy blew out the side of a pair of Nike running shoes.
I have a friend who is a good squatter (lifted at Arnold this year, etc). He just switched to Safes with a 1" heel and he squats medium wide. He said the extra inch is helping him hit depth.
I squat in wrestling shoes. Almost like barefoot, but not quite.
My training partner squats barefoot and likes it because he hasn't found shoes he likes.
The only major consideration is if you plan on competing, the rules state you will need to wear shoes.

Hey guys, I just wanted to give you all an update on my experience with Squatting in just socks. I personally find it much easier and it completely eliminated the pain in my feet that I had previously experienced while doing my Squats with shoes on. I feel myself really being able to drive through my heels now, moreso than with shoes on. The weight I'm using is very light as I'm using a higher rep range, so I'll try to remember to post again when I get to heavier weights (heavy for me at least ). Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate it!

Hey guys brand new member here. Been squatting for a few months now. I have been curious about the no-shoe thing aswell. Ive tried it while lifting heavy and noticed more balance and stability when going low. Its easier to drive from the heels, i can even keep my toes off the ground. The down side I see is having to take your shoes off is a pain plus the chances of injuring my toes increase. I workout in x-training cuz there very comfortable but when going heavy on squats or dl i can feel the sole failing to provide a stable foundation i can feel movement side to side. SO i think im going to get some flat sole shoes n try it out. just thought id let you know about my experience.
