    Eat before or after workout

    Hi all,

I am wondering if I should eat before or after my workout in the morning. As it is, I do not eat anything after 8 PM. I normally go to bed around midnight, and get up at 7:45, and am at the gym at 8:30 for an hour and 40 min, at which point I have a protain shake, head home and eat lunch around noon time.

My trainer says not to eat until after my workout, but I read somewhere that it would be good to eat something before my workout.

    My workout is:

    20 min cardio
    an hour of lifting
    20 min cardio

    thanks!

I always suggest a good breakfast before working out.

Why are you doing 20mins of Cardio before you lift? You should cut that down to 5-10 mintues, then do 30-40minutes afterwards.

Eat some toast, and a protein shake before lifting, or make a good breakfast.

I usually try to eat 6 small meals per day. That pretty much gaurantees that I have taken in nutrients both shortly before and shortly after my workout

I wouldnt recommend eating a huge plate of pasta right before working out......but I often grab a small meal of some cottage cheese, peanut butter, and make a "Better n' Eggs" omelet (no cholesterol.....still get the protien) for myself. That way Im not feeling overly full but I've still got some food in me.

Post workout I like some cottage cheese (Breakstones small curd is my personal faovrite) and maybe a grilled chicken breast with half a sweet potato and some brocoli/lima beans/etc. If Im feeling like I need a guilty pleasure I'll put some brown sugar on the sweet potato while its in the oven.......tastes sooooo good.

Oh yeah....and I agree on the whole cardio thing......other then for warm up you should do your cardio after you lift.

It doesn't matter when you do your cardio; it is a personal preference.

That being said, sometimes doing cardio before you lift makes it harder to workout.

My opinion; eat before and after. Eat at night as well before you go to bed. Keep the cardio for after your lifting session.
No citizen has a right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training...what a disgrace it is for a man to grow old without ever seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.
