Looking to buy a new suit...need advice (reps) (serious)

This is my first suit purchase and I am looking to buy a good quality suit for a decent price, no designer suits where im paying for the name.

I am looking at the price range of $200-$300 for the suit and tailoring..

I am rather tall (6'5) and have wide shoulders

My questions are where should i begin searching? Men's warehouse? Big and Tall? JC Pennys?

Is custom tailoring worth the money or should i just find a decent fit off the racks? Also when I am trying the suits on what should i specifically look for in measurements and fittings?

    Thanks!

    Yes, get your suit tailored.

With your height, I'd consider a three button design, somewhat traditional cut. For color, I'd go with black. Black is versatile, classic and timeless; it can be worn at formal business functions or in more casual social settings based on the colors you wear with it.

I personally prefer cuffed pants with no more than one pleat.

For fit (pre-tailoring), there shouldn't be any issues with the chest or shoulders. This is something that will be extremely difficult for a tailor to correct. Even OTR, the suit should have a pretty good feel to it. You want to have to make as few alterations as possible. The same applies for pants.

Post tailoring, your jacket sleeve should touch where the wrist ends and the thumb extension begins. This will allow for a small portion of your shirt sleeve to show. There should be a single front-break in the crease of your pants as you stand comfortably upright. The back length of the pants will be slightly longer so that it doesn't drag on the floor but does extend to the heel of the shoe (assuming a traditional/non-European cut.)

When buying OTR, try to get as good of a fit as you can. It's better to get one that is a little too big than one that is too small.

    x2 on the tailor made.

My $250 custom made blazer fits/looks/has better quality than my $500+ Calvin Klein blazer. I prefer flat fronts to pleats though, no cuffs.

Tailor. Suits are rarely machine washable.

    Don't buy a suit online!

If your in the 200-300 range you can get a nice suit just don't expect it to be name brand.

Yeah, you can give Men's Warehouse a try, but in general a lot of the brands you guys are suggesting are way out of this guy's price range. Men's Warehouse will have some cheaper suits, but will also tailor them for you which you will be needing if you are a weird size.

Sorry, can't give any advice on the stores. I've been picking up my suits from Asia for years now. Go over there and you can have three-piece custom suits made for under $300. I've also done the whole buying Armani and Valentino in Italy but honestly, I like the suits I've had made in Asia just as much. They use the same materials and are extremely proficient at copying any designs of suits that you show them. They do the same for shoes as well.

I guess you could start out somewhere like Men's Warehouse. Again though, I don't have any personal experience with that so I'm not really sure.

EDIT: I see someone beat me to the Men'S Warehouse idea.

It's cool man, you don't have to rep.
It's super hard to find a fit off the rack unless you are a really normal size. I'm somewhat short, have very short arms, yet wear a 44-46" in a jacket, so it was impossible for me to find anything that would fit, esp when you're looking at a 30" waist in the pants. Add a 17" neck to that... Suits and shirts are difficult. Men's Warehouse got me a pretty decent suit for ~$300, that fits well.

For you being a 6'5" it will probably be even more tough, you might also want to give Big and Tall a try since that's kind of their thing.
