Considering I run about 2 miles before I lift, and bike 2 miles after I lift I think lifting is better (Base on that alone)

i've golfed 36 holes a couple times walking with an hour break for lunch, but there's no way i could make it through two workouts with a similar break

Golf carts are the only reason I've ever golfed. Destroying those things is way more fun then hitting a little white ball around a field.

If you are lifting for an 1.5 hrs then you probably aren't going very intense. I picked golfing because I hit the ball 10 times per hole. That is 180 swings!

They are different types of workouts. If you walk 18 holes carrying a bag, I think you will burn more calories. Depending on the course, you are lugging the bag 4+ miles.

I dont know if you get more cardio exercise playing golf or working out, but man i hated walking 18 holes in 90 degree weather back in high school, and by the 18th hole that 30 lb bag seems like a 100 lb bag, but i think thats because i weighed only 125lb back then.

Actually I do have intense workouts which is why i dont understand my roomate's reasoning.

.. but the 1.5hrs is for chest/tri day, and back/bi day. I only go an hr for shoulder day and and an hr for leg day

Thats KJ Choi. He is a former pro powerlifter turned pro golfer. He is pretty good too, I think he is in the top 12 or so in the world. Looks like he has lost all his mass though.

The only way that golf could compare if its 95degrees outside with a humidity of 90.
It will make you sweat your ass of. Iv lost several pounds because of it.
But no matter how long I hit golf balls i have never been toned in my front body.
It does well on your shoulders, back, and traps. But thats about it.

Golf is a tiring game pretty much because your swinging and walking for 3-4 hours. Worse if you're carrying your golf bag. But no way can it be compared to lifting, when I say lifting i mean HEAVY lifting, actually sweating it out in the gym. grunting, straining face muscles making funny faces in the mirror trying to get that last rep in type of lifting. The only thing golf really gives me is more stress when the ball doesn't go your way.

<-- 14 handicap and still hating the game since I started playing. The more I think about it, it pisses me off but I keep going back and getting more pissed off. I'm like it's bitch....reminds me of most of the R/H threads, heh.
I hate signatures, but I love irony.

id say golf burns more calories doesnt mean its a more intensive work out though.
Strength, size, power and speed arent achievable without dedication, focus and determination.

<-- 14 handicap and still hating the game since I started playing. The more I think about it, it pisses me off but I keep going back and getting more pissed off. I'm like it's bitch....reminds me of most of the R/H threads, heh.
Oh i am its bitch. Ive been its bitch since i chose to do this for a living.
Im a .6 handicap and iv come to this decision.
Golf will not give you a workout like the gym. YES, some of the most in shape men
do play golf, but some of the more out of shape men play golf. Look at the big boi
John Daly. These golfers choose to be in such great shape is so that their body does
not F*** up by their golf swing when they get older. They also do it so they can keep up
with the length of the golf course.

    /for me

1 hour lifting vs. 4 hours golf looking just at calories burned, golf is the winner.

1 hour lifting, 23 hours rebuilding
    vs
4 hours golf, 20 hours rebuil... oh wait

Over an entire day lifting is better for you (looking at calories burned only, but what the hell we're on a BB site, lifting is better all the same)

yes, you would say, but where's ur proof? most people misconstrue the sweating and being tired when done golfing with "all the excercise" they got. But when you think about it, you are sweating from being in the sun/heat for 4 damn hours, not from excercise. You're tired because you've been standing all day, not from exercise. You're also tired from walking, which obviously is considered cardio to an extent, but in no way did you walk enough distance(nor with enough consistency) to burn more calories or get more excercise than lifting.

Dont think anyone is saying golf is a better workout...thats retarded. You wont get in better shape playing golf...however, that being said when all we are talking about is total calories burned then yea I think 4-5 hours of golf beats an hour in the gym.

we talked about it again and he says that if you took 2 people of the same age/height/etc. and made one play golf for2 months and the other lift for 2 months,

he says that the one who played golf will be more in shape than the one who lifted weights
