Ok, so the gym I go to only has a smith machine for bench press. I've heard that it's not ideal because it doesn't require you to use your stabilizer muscles and people typically lift more weight on a smith. I think I've been doing this too much maybe, because today I tried bench pressing with dumbbells for the first time and it was hard as hell. On a smith I can do over 200 pounds, but with dumbbells I was wobbling all over the place with 2 50's. I ended up doing like 5 sets of 10 with 45's in each hand, just taking it slow and trying to have good form.
Any thoughts/tips? I only just started using free weights and I feel like I shoulda been using them all along.

Just so everyones knows... there are no specific "stabilizing muscles". Every muscle in your body is a stabilizer muscle, just so everyone gets that clear and knows that there is no group of muscles called "stabilizer muscles". BUT free weights will require more stabilization around the joint so your muscles will have to work to balance the weight more.
