    Strength loss on cut...

    Hello,

I just started my cut a week ago...

I also finished by 5x5 program a week ago...

I decided that I would switch up the lifts and try a 3x10 program for all of my major lifts, but I have noticed a decrease in bench strength the past week.

    According to my one rep max, for a 3 x 10 program, I should lift 170, 180, 195.
I only got 195 seven times last week, which was the first day of my cut.

This week I was only able to rep out 5 on the last set of 195.

My one rep max at the end of my 5x5 program was 265.

Is strength loss typical on a cut? Should I up my calories?

    Thanks,

    M

If you are doing any cardio for your cut, do it post workout. If thats not the problem, a lack of carbohydrates could be causing a strength loss. try taking most of your carbs about 2-3hours before the gym.

Increase carb intake. You may be working out harder than expected. Don't worry you won't gain fat, but you will gain your energy back. Add another 300 calories of carbs/day and see where that gets you.

It is normal to lose some strength with cutting weight, as most average people will end up losing some muscle with overall weightloss. However there are ways to reduce this risk, such as proper nutrient timing and caloric intake and also good cardio timing is beneficial. There are times when cardio is more catabolic towards muscle tissue and times when it is more adipose focused. Different cardio methods also help in the same fashion as changing up your weight routine. And some good supplmentation doesn't hurt. BCAA's are great for sustaining muscle during a cut, and some have even testified to muscle gains while taking them and cutting...but it differs from person to person and I'm not sure how viable claims like the last one really are.
