its a trial. there are supposed to be witnesses. there will be lawyers on both sides and the jury listens. If you commence an action in the real world, the opposing party rarely volunteers to help. You are generally forced to take steps, that could take a long time, to get those witnesses (subpoena etc..) Congress wanted this all done before the New Year so they expedited the impeachment finding (which is their right). But Congress could have done FAR more to get the WH to cooperate but that would have taken months/years and the purpose of this impeachment was simply to circumvent the 2020 election and waiting months/years to get this done properly didn't fit their narrative.

So yeah, this is ALL just a political circus (on both sides). If a prosecutor thinks a defendant is guilty but they know they won't be able to get a conviction, they won't bring the case to trial. The Dems have known they weren't getting the votes in the Senate, so why do any of this year?
