If you can't do a single pull-up, I guess the logical thing is to do pulldowns or use one of those assisted pullup machines. At least those are the advice I use to see in muscle mags. But I think you should (in addition to those) do stuff like partial reps and even negatives. When I was a kid, I couldn't do one pullup on those stupid President's Fitness Test we did in PE class (I think that was what it was called) and didn't have access to a gym to do any fancy stuff. So I got a chin up bar and just kept trying to get one until I did, then I was eventually able to get more and more full reps.

There are programs to develop your pullups and increase reps, I'm sure a search in the exercise forum would bring some up. For me, I just got a door unit pullup bar and actually jumped/assisted with my legs to help me get up to the bar, and tried to come down slowly with some of the reps. Soon I was jumping less and pulling more and finally I was able to do pullups again. At 40 I think I was at zero - one pullup, now I'm closing in on 4 sets of 7. Anyway, inverted rows seemed to help also.

You have to train your mind the same way you train your body. You must protect it against the negative and feed it with the positive. Be mindful of what you watch, what you read and who you allow to influence you. Learn to consider your thoughts emotions and actions. Trust your gut face your fears head on and never quit. AJ Roberts
