Alec Baldwin fires prop gun, kills one injures another on set

Baldwin, 63, had reportedly fired what was described as a "prop firearm" at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, fatally wounding cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, and wounding director Joel Souza, 48, the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper reported.

Two of the newspaper’s staffers – a reporter and a photographer – said they saw Baldwin "in tears" after the incident, which the newspaper reported had not yet been declared an "accident" by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office.

You would think that there would be several layers of fail-safes and inspections on the set for all guns.

So, we will wait for the next one to happen.

    A criminal investigation is underway.

Yeah, seems really fishy. I was under the impression that prop guns wouldn't even hold live ammo; they're designed so that ammo doesn't even fit in the chamber.

Maybe someone switched the prop gun for a real one??

    From the link I posted;

Blanks use paper or plastic wadding to seal gunpowder into the cartridge, and this wadding is propelled from the barrel of the gun with enough force to cause injury if the weapon is fired within a few feet of the body, particularly a vulnerable spot, such as the temple or the eye. At a close enough range, the effect of the powder gases is a small explosion, so although the paper wadding in the blank that Hexum discharged did not penetrate his skull, there was enough blunt force trauma to shatter a quarter-sized piece of his skull and propel the pieces into his brain, causing massive hemorrhaging.

Hopefully the investigation will find out. From what I have heard, blanks still can kill if the gun is close enough. Happened in 1957 to an actor who aimed at his head and the wadding and plastic shot out with enough force to kill him. But, if the person who got killed this time was a few feet or further, a blank does not make sense. It may have been a real bullet. If so, many heads should roll and there may be a killer who put real bullets in the gun.

All speculation until what happened is uncovered.

One killed and one injured, blanks don't normally do that. Was it a through and through or was it fired twice?

Acting, prop gun or not I would have a hard time pointing a weapon at someone, let alone pulling the trigger. Was taught firearm safety and muzzle control since I was knee high to a grasshopper.

Never point a weapon at something you don't want to shoot and treat every firearm as if it is loaded, I have lived by and preached this for years, pretty sure I would have checked that weapon, prop or not. It's just what I do. I check my own coming out of the safe, If a weapon gets in my hands I check it.

I read that the entire incident is on film and the police are in possession of it. Not surprising if true since this was on a movie set.

I have taken a firearms safety class before and been to the gun range so I agree.

But have you ever seen a movie set? There are people everywhere. It's totally understandable that someone ended up in the line of fire.

The question is why did a projectile come out of the barrel of the gun? Guns used on set are not 'prop guns' when they're being fired. They're real guns loaded with blanks.

Prop guns are used when the character is just carrying a weapon and not firing it.

Truth! That was drilled into our heads in Boot Camp and combat training.
Way back in the day, my cousin (who was like 12 at the time) was in his neighbor's buddy's camper next door. The neighbor kid reaches under the mattress--pulls out a pistol--and points it at my cousin. My cousin was very experienced with guns even at that time from hunting with my uncle and other cousin. He said "Don't fkn point that thing at me". And the kid replies "It isn't loaded"--points the gun away from them and proceeds to blowout the windshield of the camper. True story.

Guy with a hair 'trigger' temper. Shoots two people with a prop gun? Neither of these prople would have been another actor in a scene?

    Fishy.

The tragedy is obvious and sad. The irony that the shooter is Baldwin, a left wing, anti gun nut who glorifies guns in movies to be a faux tuff guy, is delicious.

Fukkin idiots using the phrase "prop gun" if a gun is a prop then it cannot fire. From what I read this firearm was loaded with live rounds which is absolutely ridiculous on a movie set.

Baldwin is anti 2A so this is ironic. If he had gun knowledge he wouldn't be anti 2A and that woman would be alive today.

The prop gun that killed “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza on during an on-set accident on Thursday contained a “live single round,” according to an email sent by IATSE Local 44 to its membership.

I mean the whole point of Hollywood gun safety is you might in fact have to point it at or near something you don’t intend to kill. It’s about the safeguards to make sure that is done safely, which weren’t followed or failed.

+++A bit of reporting that, if borne out, suggests significant exposure for the production team, of which Baldwin is one.

    https://www.latimes.com/entertainmen...walked-off-set

Hours before actor Alec Baldwin fatally shot a cinematographer on the New Mexico set of “Rust” with a prop gun, a half-dozen camera crew workers walked off the set to protest working conditions.

The ‘Rust’ producers replaced union crew members engaged in a work stoppage with non-union substitutes hours before the shooting incident

There were two misfires on the prop gun on Saturday and one the previous week, the person said, adding “there was a serious lack of safety meetings on this set.”

A source close to union said Local 44 does not know what projectile was in the gun and clarified that “live” is an industry term that refers to a gun being loaded with some material such as a blank ready for filming.
