    Orange juice pre workout?

I workout first thing when I wake up. I usually have whey and dextrose about 30 minutes before my workout, but I ran out of dextrose and had some orange juice instead.

I was just wondering if orange juice is a good pre workout carb?

Orange juice as your pre-workout carb? Good grief. For starters it is loaded with sugar. It's a terrible carb source too.

Why can't you eat oatmeal when you wake up?

Sounds like OP got the broscience backwards. He is attempting to "spike" the insulin pre-workout. I guess he will be light years ahead of the crowd when it comes to speeding up recovery.

Watch out, this dude knows what he's talking about...

Anyway, for carbs, yea probably, but the sugar is going to be slower digesting fructose if you're still set on the broscience.

Well what else would be a good carb to take 30 minutes before working out?
I'd eat oatmeal but I don't want to get cramps in the middle of my workout.

    Any other suggestions?

I workout in the morning too. I'm not much of a morning person, so I'm usually always groggy and lack energy to make a meal, so I usually just eat a few cereal bars/granola bars, cereal, or a deli sandwich. Also, no need to spike your insulin with dextrose pre-workout...some do it post-workout, but it's not required. Definitely eat a good amount of carbs pre-workout though. Something that will fill you up, but not weigh you down (i.e. a fatty meal). OJ is fine to have as you eat your meal, but you definitely want something that will fill you up. Going to the gym feeling hungry is not good.

Any carb that doesn't upset your tummy would be fine. In general, the closer you get to the workout, the more you should be looking at liquid nutrition. OJ is just fine, but my comment was directed at the reasoning behind it, often being that it will elevate insulin, which some intend to do for reasons that they do not understand.

If you don't feel comfortable with any carbs, then just have a scoop of whey or you can even workout fasted.
