My sibling (*or inlaw) is an idiot

Anyone care to share stories about a sibling or brother or sister in law that's just a sad example of a human being? I have one, but surely I'm not alone.

I have a brother who ****-posts on internet message boards, bitching about family members behind their backs. What an idiot!

LOL but no. I've got a 55 year old sister who has been trouble her whole adult life. She had an opportunity to right many wrongs when she needed a place to stay two years ago, but she took advantage of that and was asked to leave after just two months of more trouble. She moves three hours away (hardly the other side of the country), and even though neither she nor her boyfriend has jobs (both on disability), she flatly refused my request to drive in every 6 weeks or so and help me out with a doctor's visit for our mom or some other chore. I get tired of working my 40 and being a husband, father, grandfather, etc. and doing all of my mom's shopping, paying all the bills (her money as she has some income), doing all the yardwork, and with my wife's help, taking her to all of the doctor's visits. There's just the two of us, and with the exception of the two month stay a couple of years ago, I've done everything since my mom needed help about four years ago (coincided when I found out she had been getting $2k to $3k from my mom every year). We have been paying someone to help clean her house recently. While I'll still do dishes and run the sweeper when I visit, it's nice to have someone do more rigorous cleaning for her.

Dude, that sucks and I feel your aggravation, and I could type up a bunch of stuff with the goal of providing a form of support, or simply suggest you watch the clip Karl posted above if you haven't already.

I've seen you mention your family difficulties in several other threads over the last year or so and it sounds a really **** situation, my heart goes out to you. Really not sure what to say. It's a cliche to say, but it is true that you choose your friends but you don't choose your family. I just hope that something changes to make things said in some way.

He did not leave a letter, an email nothing, just put a gun to his mouth and ended his life. The sad part is that no one saw it coming and every once in a while I wonder what was he going through that death was his only escape and it scares me as I suffer from anxiety, anger issues.

Condolences, John. You have to be in a very dark place to kill yourself. When I was getting divorced, I had that darkness for a fraction of a second and it scared the **** out of me.

Thanks Tom. Although my mom suffers from dementia today, back in the day, she was the absolute best. Many a morning I'd get up at 4:00 am in college doing some last minute cram session before an exam, and without asking, there was my mom making homemade biscuits and gravy!

So sorry to hear that. I know that you like helping others, and that's one of the best forms of "therapy." And Lord knows you've got plenty of people here (me included) who would be willing to communicate with you if you ever felt the need.

Those of us with phuked up families try to keep good humor about it but it can be pretty nerve wrecking.

My sister got in an abusive marriage to get out of the house, then once her husband dumped her she was stuck in one of the poorest parts of Italy without 2 pennies to rub together. Don't feel too bad for her, she's not a nice person either, but I get ahead of myself. Anyway after trying and failing to convince me to get her into the US and install her at my house (she has a history of going after every married man she comes near), she berated and insulted me and told me to never try to contact her again.

Then one day I get a call at work from a complete stranger claiming to know my sister and "if Immigration calls you can you say she's coming to stay with you for a bit?" Of course she wasn't coming to stay with me, she had told me she never wanted to see me again. When I asked why Immigration would call me, he said that may happen when foreigners try to enter the country with a 1-way ticket and very little luggage. So then I tried to talk to him to figure out who this stranger was, but he would totally skirt the questions and just fluffed something about having met my sister in some way he didn't elaborate, and she was coming to see him in the US to spend a vacation with him. Anyway after a really weird exchange, I asked him to never contact me again and especially not to do something illegal or I would let the authorities know about it. I then proceeded to spend months of agony wondering if I was going to read news of my sister's body found in a canal or if she was being trafficked or god knows what.

So yeah.... family...
