Ummm, don't do what I do... But I take 3x the req dose. Only thing that knocks me out. My dumb doctors don't want to put me on good sleeping aids, they put me on **** that just has the sideeffect of drowziness, and what ever the hell the pill is actually meant for... For all I know could be taking semen capsules.

I actually did my own research, and im not sure if you can actually overdose on it.
Honestly, I had no success with 3 mg, (one pill of what I have) and thats recommended. I take 3 or 4 pills now before sleep, so thats 9 to 12 mg.
Best sleep ive ever gotten, only problem is I sleep for a long time if I dont get woken up by something (like an alarm). Usually my sleep is interrupted, but on this its nice and consistant.

3mg is about standard, but you can take up to 10mg, and in some cases people have taken >50mg's as recommended by doctors.
Better solutions if your sleep problems are not the result of a messed up schedule or jet lag would be a valerian/5-htp combo.
EDIT: As stated above, it's not a good idea to take for more than 1-2 weeks consistently.Last edited by Blitz n destroy; 01-13-2008 at 07:06 PM.

Just because some people do it doesn't mean its right. Valerian or 5-htp is NOT a better solution.
For most people, 3mg is TOO MUCH, and can negatively shift sleep phases forward instead of back, and also can have negative effects on hormones related to fertility, and likely others not yet elucidated. Bioavailability of oral melatonin varies a lot so start at a low dose. Normal secretion is about a couple hundred micrograms. Bioavailability in females is also much higher than for males.
You should be trying to supplement natural release, not replace it entirely.

Little late BUT
I've been taking Melatonin and my findings are this.
1mg does hardly anything to me
3mg does hardly aything to me
2mg is perfect
Haven't tried any other amounts, and not sure if the 3-4 times I took 3mg it was a fluke or not, but I consistently take 2mg with good success. I had some great sleep and dreams last night after being away from melatonin for a few weeks (more testing). It definitely works, and in this case - more is not better.

Ive heard of 50mg doses. christ knows what that does....
An hour before I want to go to bed I usually take 3-6mg (3mg caps) with some valerian and a skunk cone every night for a week or so and I can shift my circadian rhythm well doing this
I only use it after holidays or a long break when Ive got used to going to bed at 3am and need to start going at 11pm again.
