An online petition is calling on grocery store chain Trader Joe's to change the packaging and branding on some of its products amid claims it encourages racist stereotypes.
The protesters have taken issue with branding on the chain's food products from different parts of the world which change the name in 'Trader Joe's' to a popular or common name from its country of origin. It sees products from China branded with 'Trader Ming's', products from Italy named 'Trader Giotto's' and those from Mexico named 'Trader José's'."
Not trying to be controversial...but I don't get why "Trader Jose's" is racist vs. the traditional "Trader Joe's" is not.
1. Is this suggesting any name signifying a non-white origin is something to be hidden or ashamed of?
2. Wasn't the entire agenda behind "muh diversity" to encourage acceptance of non-white names?
3. Should this cancel-culture policy also be widely applied to ethnic restaurants/businesses with ethnic names? I mean is this a point of pride or a point of embarassment for them?
BTW: Yes, I understand "racist stereotypes" such as why wearing blackface is wrong or making fun of someones' inherent features is unacceptable...I just can't figure out how they are going to draw a line between what is considered offensive or not.
Personally, I would rather buy Trader Ming's Noodles than something similar marked as "Asian-inspired noodles"

Turns out you are right....this is kinda breaking news but the cancel-culture just discovered that original Trader Joe was a slave-trader. This the breaking totally-unedited unaltered image that just surfaced...
This obviously was before Hawaii was colonized thus the reason for him not wearing a Hula Shirt (which rock btw...you can't be in a bad mood wearing one....Trader Joes/ALDI Corp. are onto something).

Now my mouth is watering...see what I mean?
Sometimes certain trigger words (even those feigning authenticity) actually do work. What if products start getting re-worked and simply mention "chicken based on the cuisine of the South Asian subcontinent colonized by the English, etc. VS. Trader Patel's tandoori-magic or whatever?
