I've traveled the US pretty extensively. My official conclusion is that 80% is nondescript (midwest), 20% is amazing (coasts, rockies), and 20% are ****holes (ghettos, southern rural ghettos). Nothing new here. Besides the natural features, it's the people that make those areas what they are.

I've actually been through Trump Country a decent amount. I would say that most places are not **** holes. They are not places I would choose to live, but most are nice enough and the people almost universally are much nicher than city folk.

Do we really want to talk about ****holes? Most of Trump country is depleted, rusty, and windswept. Nobody has a decent paying job or quality educations. Literacy rates are low compared to the productive parts of the US. They are of ill health. They cling to religious superstitions. They are takers who rely on federal assistance. Anyone with any sort of ambition and dream for a better life has to leave to find it.

I would rather live in Lagos than Mississippi, given those two options.

Besides DC, Mississippi - the one you chose to specify - is the blackest state in America. Much of the black population there is rural (rural being the other part you chose to specify in the title). The other blackest states are:

Louisiana
Georgia
Maryland
South Carolina
Alabama
North Carolina

Besides Maryland, all Trump-voting states with large rural African-American populations who suffer from low educational attainment, ill health, low-paying jobs and who large rely on federal assistance......all things you specified and disproportionately prevalent in the black communities of the blackest states.

i buy all my meat from a farmer that lives down the road from me....I really cant figure out how you city/burb boyos eat the CAFO chit they sell in grocery stores. I rarely lock my front door, i think most of the windows are unlocked. I hop on my MTB hit some sweet trails right out my front door, two breweries within bike distance. While the rest of the so-called country people focus on material wealth ITT.....Here is my country living:

I live in California but my ex grew up in North Dakota and Montana, visited both states a few times. Outside of not very populated, people aren't bad seriously. The media tend to advertise only the extremes of things. Examples: most people in Florida would tell you hurricanes aren't as bad as they seem, Californians will tell you the fires here aren't bad unless you live in the hills, most rural people aren't actually racist.

Sure, when I was visiting my ex, his family uses very outdated language, referring to me as oriental for example. But I know they're not using the word in a demeaning way, just from their part of town, that's what is still in use. Most of the farmers in North Dakota that I met are actually quite educated. Just because people aren't working in big pharma or tech doesn't mean they are illiterate and/or stupid. I actually find the help your neighbor culture in North Dakota very endearing. His parents would always pick up groceries for the elderly neighbors too because the drive to town is 50 miles. Things like that you don't see in places like California very often. I'm all for advocating for equality, but "everyone is equal" tend to make people forget to be courteous to the elders and chivalry just goes out the window.

Op stated that trump country is a comparable chit hole to haiti/africa when in reality while there are poor areas of rural america you will see skid rows in ever major city in the US and LA has several areas like this BTW. Drive under any overpass in LA and you will see tent city set up.
