I just finished making a platform for home-gym deadlifting on the cheap and thought Id share my project details. I used Detards platform as a model, seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb3CV...layer_embedded Thanks dude.
Materials Purchased: total of ~$115
- 3x Sheets of ½ inch 4x8 plywood from Home Depot - $15 each
- 1x Sheet 3/4 4x8 plywood cut into two 4x4 pieces from Home Depot (only used one 4x4 piece) - $35
- 1x Ύ inch 6x4 stall mat from Tractor Supply Company 35$
Materials I had on hand:
- Tools (power drill, power sander)
- Wood stain, finish, glue, sponge brushes
- Lots of 1 Ό inch screws
Directions:
1. Stacked the 3 sheets of half inch plywood together using wood glue and let them set overnight before screwing the 3 sheets together.
2. Lightly sanded the edges of the assembled main platform along with the Ύ 4x4 upper piece.
3. Stained and finished the Ύ 4x4 upper piece and attached it to the center of my platform with wood glue and screws (also stained the front of the platform for aesthetics).
4. Cut the stall mat into two 2x4 sections with a utility knife (this part sucked, would have preferred a longer knife, a saw, or something).
5.Applied Multi-Purpose Liquid Nails to the bottom of the 2x4 staff mats and secured them in place on the platform with several more screws.
Voila, platform complete! I wasnt looking for anything fancy, just a rock solid platform that would hold up over time and save my concrete floors. This platform fits the bill. Now I just need something to clean up those rubber edges a bit.
Here are some pics.

I've stained my platform without issue. It shouldn't be an issue on ANY platform. All platforms, whether homemade or bought, will have at least 1 coat (preferably 3-4 coats) of polyurethane sealant. The stain will only color the wood. The polyurethane will protect the wood from scratches and scuffs.
FWIW...I used to install and re-finish gym floors as a summer job.

Thanks again, everyone, for the positive feedback.
Packemup87 is correct, the wood stain and finish are not sticky. The surface isn't slick either for anyone who may be wondering. I also wanted to mention that the stall mats are quite solid so there's hardly any give to them even under a heavy load, thus keeping the bottoms of your feet on an even plane with the spot where your plates hit the mat.
I highly recommend these stall mats for anyone who's looking into gym flooring btw. At $35-$39 for a 6'x4' slab I feel like this product would be tough to beat in that regard.

Bumping this ancient thread!
Soon to be doing the same thing Yours is the best looking one I've seen for a homemade platform and I like the instructions.
I'm going to do a little modification to create a lip on the front for mine I think. Probably to prevent the bar from rolling off the front.βͺββββββββͺ Equipment Crew #56 βͺββββββββͺ

I had made a similar design...and wanted to mention after just breaking everything down in my garage in order to move it appears to have done it's job just fine. No cracks or damage to the garage floor at all after getting some serious use by me and friends deadlifting and doing cleans for 4 years or so.

I followed the same basic layout on mine. One thing I would change though if I could redo mine, the middle part instead of using a 4x4, I'd probably use a 3x4 instead with wider stall mats on each end
reason for this, with the 4x4 middle, the plates are just a couple inches outside of the 4x4 wood. I've had a couple of times where my plates dropped/bounced inside the wooden part after a drop from DL height. no harm done though because I'm using bumpers. although the wooden part is all scuffed up mainly from using my DL jack-!!!---!!!- No Excuses Homemade Equipment Crew #8 -!!!---!!!-

Has anyone here built one like this?

It looks like you could get away with not even using bumpers with a platform like that.Aaron Bennett

I got the wood for mine yesterday. I'm going to go with a bit of a smaller piece of plywood for the center section, possibly 3.5'x4' or 3'x4'. Also going to be adding band attachments near the front and rear so I can stretch mini bands across the bar. The only worry I have is that the wood may flex from the band tension.

i built my center channel using 6 sheets of plywood...it's pretty heavy. you might want to consider that if you're going to attach band hooks. also, my center channel is 42" wide x 6' long. I wish I had made even a bit more narrow (though my half rack sits on it, which makes things awkward with that narrow of a width).

The absolute easiest way to cut stall mats is with an electric jigsaw and a straight edge. Fast clean and easy. Good luck.
