this thing looks awesome for those of us who dont have a lat tower. im sure it will have its flaws when using heavy weights but for tricep pushdowns how can you go wrong for 80 bucks. i wish i had this thing ten years ago

I missed it. All I saw was big dude and a lot of York plates on a yellow rack. You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Tombro, thanks for pointing this out. It looks like a good solution for folks who don't have money/space for a bigger lat pulldown.
I know that Scooby doesn't get a lot of love around here sometimes, but he actually made a Youtube video several years ago that outlined a homemade version of this thing. I would imagine his version might be a hair cheaper, but you have to have the right spot in the house to set it up.[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #29 []---[]

we got to discussing this in the Black Friday thread when Spud's whole site was on sale. Someone came up with a quick shopping list of the items you would need and it comes out cheaper then the standard price, but not the sale price. Also his did not include the Spud pin or tricep handle (which are both nice on their own right)

I always get a little bit antsy when I read about home-brew "pulldown" rigs in this forum.
If you're going to pull a handle, rope, or anything else towards your face/head, make sure the rigging you use is securely fastened to something immovable, and don't use a bunch of jack-leg hardware and attachments from Home Depot. Teeth, as well as noses and other facial features, are difficult to replace, and generally expensive.

Well, you're certainly right about that. I happen to have a lot of specialized rock climbing gear that would be well-suited for a project like that, but I don't have a spot in the house that I would consider bombproof enough to warrant giving it a go. I also have a fairly nice selectorized lat pulldown!

I have one, it's ok, but real not optimal for me. I have it connected to a rack which is only 80" tall, so the cable is a bit long to do anything except angled rows/pulldowns like in the vid at 31 secs in. Also you must be super strict, and not use any momentum, as the weights will start swing like a pendulum. With a taller attachment it would be more useful.

I posted that listing because that's where the picture of the frayed/loose stitches came from.
The listing's price is actually competitive when SCB isn't having a sale. It also has a few configurations SCB doesn't, like one that gives you two loading pins and moves them off to the side:
I just don't know if it's legit.

I picked up one of the economy pulleys on Black Friday. Works good but your form has to be correct and you can't try to go fast or the weight will start swinging which feels odd.
The taller you are, the higher the pulley needs to be hung as the total length of the cable and straps is 117". I'm 5' 10" and hanging it from my power rack at 79" is too low even when I wrap the strap so the pulley is as close to the bar as possible. If hang it from my joist mounted pull up bar at 85", the straps are at the correct height for triceps work.

I think the Spud pulley system and other versions would be perfect for making a home armwrestling machine. Build a wooden armwrestling table to the specs, add the piece to hang the above system on, use generic D-handle with Ironbull grips and voila you can train for armwrestling.
.
.
I can tell the guy in the video below is not using his own rack. Just hearing the banging noise of weights hitting the rack frame makes me cringe.

I would have to believe that a 25lb weight is NOT going to be enough to be doing lat pull downs even at a 1:1 pulley ratio. Curious to hear feedback from buyers on how many plates you really need to load.

Bump. I have a rogue r3 setup, and I've always wanted to find an affordable pulley setup. It's pretty affordable right now at spud's site, and iwas gonna buy a 3ply belt anyways.
I'm 6'2, and my rack is 90" tall. Do you guys think this would work since it says it's designed for shorter racks?
Thanks

I have my pulley mounted at 85". Mounting at 90" would shorten the cable by 10" / double the difference. You are 4" taller than me, so the abs strap would be 6" higher for you, relatively speaking.
The cable should be long enough to work, but you probably wouldn't be able to lower the weights all the way to the floor while working out.
Some of the earlier posts mention an extension for taller racks. Spud also makes a long version of the abs strap which might work.

The answer is very simple. Go to a hardware store and buy a short section of chain (~12 inches) and a quick link (1/4 inch). Connect the chain between the cable and your attachment or between the cable and your weight pin. Use only as much of the chain as you need to get the length you want. You can also easily adjust the chain length to accommodate different attachments or different exercises.
Be sure to use a quick link. They are inexpensive and strong enough for weight lifting. A 1/4" QL costs $2 at Ace HW and has a WLL (Working Load Limit) of 880 lbs (400kg).
You only need one:

That would be a easier solution. I was thinking he would need a longer cable when he only needs an extension on the cable.
FYI - my guess is that 90" is the highest you can mount it without getting a longer cable. Mounted at 85", there is only 15" between the pulley and the stop at the end of the cable.
Edit: Not thinking. You would just need a longer chain and you could make any height rack work. If the rack is over 90" though, you would have to attach the chain on the weight side to get clearance through the pulley.Last edited by Mbenson122; 12-19-2014 at 04:29 PM.
