So far so good! I've been able to get in good workouts around my training etc: good/bad looks like I won't be going to the field this rotation, which means I can stick to my regular programming.
Yesterday had a solid bench session with the slingshot - used my own slingshot for the first time which some nice folks in the gym spotted me and also recorded my double @ 345. Moved pretty well! Looking forward to a couple heavy singles in deads today!
    It's never too late!

It's a great day in the Pepper orbit!
Did heavy deads last night, with the final 'warmup'/working rep at 525 - didn't feel too great or easy so wasn't sure, but wanted to go for the magical 250kg/550lb PR so pushed myself to focus and get it done! Felt great to hit that milestone for sure!
This morning did a bod pod and was surprised and very pleased with my results so far: 11% decrease in body fat percentage since Nov 2020, lost 24lb of fat from 61-37lb of fat, gained 20lb of muscle, feeling really good about my life changes so far!
Thanks all for the encouragement here!
    Love, Pepper

Yesterday had a pretty good squat session: was able to get 500 for the second time since my injury... still not 100% sure I'm hitting comp depth and the camera placement wasn't the best... for sure my tempo squat sets after were virtually atg.
Felt pretty good after - my neck had been tight but after lifting it actually loosened up and felt better.

Due to the holiday I'm hitting the heavy stuff three days in a row... heavy bench yesterday. Worked up to a slingshot assisted 365 which moved quickly, my backdown sets of paused doubles at 305 were a lot harder...
    was a good day regardless!

Working my way back up, 345lbs for 5 sets of 5 reps, I should have gone heavier it was light, but I am in no rush.

So much great stuff in here, it's humbling to see guys my age and older effortlessly putting up these numbers.

Mostly teenagers in my gym and their form is on the border of laughable and dangerous. Got one kid that raises his entire body off the bench to meet the barbell on bench so hard that I can't believe he hasn't busted ribs or a collarbone yet.
Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.

Go to ticktok and search for a guy name JPcoach, he has all the young folks believing that compound movements like squats, deadlifts, bent over rows etc are OK but not good for hypertrophy. He also says the lat pulldown is useless for building the lats and has a variation that you now see all these young dudes utilizing it.

Yeah, normally I lift in my garage, but lifting in an army gym this month has been eye-opening. There are some very fit/jacked men and women here, but most seem to wander aimlessly from station to station randomly lifting (and squats are definitely the worst).
On the other hand, yesterday after my top set the young fella next to me and I were talking Candito etc and the next guy over came and asked me for some deadlift advice which was cool.

I attempted the 565 yesterday but I shot my hips up and had nothing left for lockout after I got the weight to my knees. Next time!

NO thanks , I won’t ever waste time on tiktok, it’s China social media company. FB and any type of American SM is banned in China unless they hand over the servers to China that’s very suspicious and I won’t take anything on that platform srs.

Sorry for the derail but not sure you knew this info. Take it as you want.

Do you need an account to get on there?

Tonight I broke from my strictly Hypertrophy stuff just to feel some heavy ass weight in my hands. I hardly ever flat BB BP anymore (f'kin elbows) but started chest day with that, I warmed up to 275 on the bar and was kind of nervous. I grabbed the kid I mentioned a few posts back for a spot, he was all into it, I told him I would just see what 1 rep felt like and go from there. Long story short I got 5 clean reps with just a little grunt and struggle on the last one, sat up and the whole gym was looking at me.

The weird thing is that in my years of powerlifting 275 x 5 was my last working set at my strongest, I'm certainly not at my strongest, most sets are 10-12 reps these days. Powerlifters don't do 10-12 sets of incline dumbells, smith machine etc. like I do. I think it's just that I'm 20 lbs overweight so 275 is just not remarkable at my bodyweight.
Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.

Here is my PR attempt at 510 - weight was heavy but went up... unfortunately I'm still fighting depth and this would have gotten red lights.... still gotta work on tension, sinking it, and driving up out of the hole... Otherwise it was a good day, hit the backdown set hard and several of the young folks standing around waiting for a squat rack gave me fist bumps when I was done. I look forward to working out in my home gym again, but it's been nice to be around this crowd

    Nice lift man

Question for you, my son wants to bench heavier, I am not into power lifting/strength training, hell my best bench was 365lbs. Can you give me any tips for him? He is tall, has long arms and is pretty thin. Most he has weighed is 190 at 6'. I know power lifters use a different setup/approach to benching.

Gym lifts are not a measure of strongman performance but ive never been able to bench 300 nor have i dead lifted 500 on a standard bar (I did 600 on trapbar) and I won 2 place in a strongman contest to a field of people who could out press me.

    Just an observation is all.

Hard to say without seeing him and where he's at. Obviously there is a lot of good stuff out there in the internets, but my main tip sight unseen is to guess he needs to focus on his base; learning to really apply leg drive through at least a little arch to get his shoulders and scaps in a better pressing position. He'll need to find a setup that gets his legs under him so he can drive up the bench (rather than off the bench): that energy transfer can be surprisingly strong. I'm at the point that I can do a quick push with my legs that feels like 80% of the work when pressing two plates. Even though pressing is chest/shoulder heavy, it's surprising what good braced core, leg drive, and lat engagement can add.

It is true - each of the powerlifting lifts have very specific demands and while they will result in increased overall strength, strongman has more functional strength elements to it. I may do a strongman or two but am concerned at my age that injuries are more likely.

I used to have Ironmaster dumbbells and got rid of them because I never used them. I was too lazy to swap weights frankly. So my plan was to get conventional dumbbells. But then COVID hit and it was impossible to buy anything. In the mean time, there is a new player on the market, Nuobell. I was very skeptical initially but seems these might be legit.

I also dont necessarily need 'heavy' dumbbells, so the 5-80 set will let me do what I need. These look like they might be perfect for the home gym so I ordered a set today. Be nice to have the option of adding some different training back in.

Picking up stones and bags use different muscles than dead lift, I saw a guy tear a hammie picking up a moderate atlas stone once.

At the same time our state chairman was age 50 competed in the 231 open class, this Guy was a wreck from powerlifting, in the clean and press event he only clean the bar once and not press it, for last place however he won every other event and usually placed first against younger more mobile guys. His shoulders were shot and had bad knees, I’ve never seen a dude compete with these knees, but the mofo won about every damn contest.

Strongman is a very unpredictable type of thing.

Pepper, I found some vids of our old contests.

This is our state chair finishing 300 an arm farmers, he has thin legs, and messed up knees as you can see (and no I'm not LOU)-

Oh yeah, and Conans Wheel, let me tell ya, it's hard for big guys, the smaller guys dominate that event because they can get the hips under the weight, I was a 1st placer in Conans because I was skinny back then.

Here is a young guy doing the same weights, but didn't finish the farmers-
