Attorneys are a joke (no offense Manly). My personal dealings are with real estate where you pay the guy $1000 to "represent you" as it is a requirement in NYS and he drafts a couple generic docs you can probably google within 20 minutes. Other states do real estate closings with just the title companies and cut out the lawyers. Personal injury attorneys are criminals whose job is to find out how much the other party(s) policy is so he/she can max it out and they take 1/3 of the money of the settlement from their client whose life most of the time will never be the same again and give them no financial guidance on preparing for their future. There are plenty that do great work i am sure, but it is the system that allows many of them to overcharge and fail us. The majority of attorneys i speak to are all pompous fools who think they know everything, about everything.
I <3 you tho Manly.Journal:

I don't do residential real estate, criminal or plaintiff's personal injury. But here are my thoughts
1. Real estate attorney: they are not expensive for residential real estate. We are talking only $500 to $2.5K. But real estate attorneys get sued ALL THE TIME and malpractice insurance for real estate work is insane. Defect in title? Sue the attorney. Didn't know there was an underground oil tank? Sue the attorney. For most of you guys, you don't need an all star real estate attorney but you get someone else your can sue. But for the real complex commercial shiit that has zoning, tax abatement/PILOT issues, environmental issues or affordable housing issues then those real estate attorneys are crucial
2. Personal injury attorneys: I can tell you from representing defendants that having a good personal injury attorney directly impacts settlement and how much money plaintiffs get. Also, they are attorneys not financial advisors. I also never really understood the issue people have with these attorneys taking a 1/3. Big cases can take years of 40+ hours a week, how should they get paid or should they do it for free? For example, say you get in a car accident. Are you going to pay someone 250 an hour for years to work on your case? Hell would you even pay them $10 an hour? The reality is the commission is the only way you guys can afford it and getting an attorney is the only way the insurance companies will take you seriously
3. Criminal Defense: if you go to trial, you'll want someone charismatic and with trial experience. Out of these three, I think the biggest difference between a good and bad attorney is felt here. They also know the prosecutors and judges
I think people don't know all that goes in to the practice of law on a daily basis. FWIW if I ever suffer a catastrophic injury or DUI I'll pay a premium because I know the value addedLast edited by im2manly; 07-03-2020 at 07:47 PM.

Wife was a paralegal for years. One under an attorney that was highly respected and had a great reputation in the fields of law he practiced. She said he knew pretty much every judge, prosecutor, and experienced attorney practicing in his very large area. Said it blew her mind how many times a case was solved over a lunch in the office or over drinks at the attorney's house. Said he would come in and tell her to stop working on a case because he talked with the attorney at a little league game the night before lol.
The other attorney she worked for was one of those "I am God" types that seemed to have a higher opinion of himself than the rest of his colleagues had. Said this dude actually had a judge bar him from appearing in front of him.
It does seem to have picked up in the Shack with some old faces. Now we need IL, Farley, and Lucifer back in hereYou would be surprised just how much time I have to waste.
