How long did it take you guys to learn how to sharpen by hand? I was thinking of purchasing some japanese water stones when I get paid again since it seems they're kind of expensive (unless found used but I don't like getting used stuff). One knife in particular that I want to get sharp is kind of awkward because I just can't seem to figure out the right angle... it looks kind of like #6:

get a sharpmaker. you can't really reprofile with it but it's good stuff. if you dont like it get the lansky deluxe system.

I learned the basics of sharpening on a stone in a week or 2 when I was 14, but I'm still learning new techniques and ideas with sharpening now.
If the knife is ground like #6, you can't do it with flat waterstones.....atleast not very easily for someone who has never free hand sharpened before.....
#6 is a convex grind, the good thing is that it's actually very cheap to sharpen it, all you need is sandpaper(ranging from 120 to 2500), a mouse pad/piece of leather, and a strop. As a general guide to free hand sharpening grits I usually double( the number of the grit each time if I'm going for a high polished edge. For example if the knife is super dull and rolled I would do 220grit, 600grit, 1200grit, 2500grit, then go to a leather strop with green CrO, I haven't seen 440grit sandpaper anywhere so I jump to the closest grit I can find which is 600grit.
Here a video demonstrating sharpening a convex edge:
The knife in the video was actually not too damaged/dull, it would to considered very dull by any knife knut though .

What makes the difference between sand paper and a stone that makes it hard to sharpen a convex grind on stone? I'm pretty sure it's convex, I'm actually not too sure. The grind does seem pretty fat, meaning the angle of the edge is a bit obtuse for my taste... I wouldn't mind reprofiling it to a scaninavian grind since I hear they are still pretty strong but can also be easily sharpened.
EDIT: I don't think it is a convex edge because if i look closer at it the blade has a 2nd bevel at the very edge of the blade.Last edited by HamMach1; 02-26-2010 at 04:19 PM.

my guess would be Busse from looking at the shape of the handle and the distinct coating on the blade. http://www.bussecombat.com/home/index.shtml

Got the RAT and the Spyderco Today
enjoy the knife pron ^_^
the coating on the izula seems very durable and provides some extra grip with bare hands or gloves. You can now get micarta handles for the izula, so you don't have to para cord wrap it - the handles are very nice and affordable, but do not come with the knife. Will post post pics once i install themLast edited by aznefxSteveo; 03-01-2010 at 01:36 PM.

For field/camping use I've got the Fehrman Last Chance. I have the coated blade and since mine is an older model my handle is more boxy but after having tried both grip styles I prefer mine. The blade is 5.5 inches long and .25 inches thick of CPM 3V. 3V is an awesome steel for knives and sits up there with some of the toughest in blade steels.
For a more everyday style carry I have the Fehrman Peacemaker. I actually prefer the fixed blades to folders whenever possible. This one sports a 4 inch blade boasting .19" thickness with a full flat grind. Once again this knife is made from CPM 3V.
I also tend to carry a Spyderco Endura for the more sheeple friendly situations.★cVc★

the burr is a microscopic bend in the edge that you create when you sharpen it. since it's microscopic, you can still have a very sharp knife with it, but by stropping, you'll flatten out the burr and it'll be even sharper.
my CRKT came in today. pretty sharp as is but can use a little more of an edge, especially on the tanto tip. this thing is gonna be a bitch to sharpenLast edited by Advil; 03-01-2010 at 01:59 PM.

I must be becoming a sog fanboy, I have 3 of their mid-high tier knives and I'm really wanting to get the Daggert2 (bead blasted) and the Creed (Satin). Also really liking RAT/ESEE, RAT7 and RTAK2. I can either get these and camping gear, or a new computer. I think Ill wait on the computert for a while.

updates**
just installed the grips on my izula, this is a freakin sweet little knife, now my favorite only to my strider. my only note was that the grips really throw off the balance of the izula by making it back heavy, but in return you get an awesome grip. I have small hands so it fits nicely.
5.11 karambit on its way and tonight I just ordered the spyderco manix 2 sprint (limited run w/ blue G-10)...damn, I think i have a problem =/
