    coffee

Had a curious question, I currently limit my coffee consumption to about 1 small cup (8oz) every 2 or so days, just at work. I don't do it anytime near my post workout.

Lift 5-6am, 50g protein shake, 1 cup cereal/2 fig newtons (40g carb) for what i need post workout in carbs

work 7-330pm. I will usually take my lunch around 10am with a cup of coffee and then a snack around 3pm and then dinner at 6.

Any reasons why one cup a day would be a negative for me? Not trying to bulk and if anything trying to cut, probably sitting around 13-14% bf at the moment but hitting 10-12% would be awesome. J/w on the effects of coffee.. keep reading it's terrible post workout or late at night (cortisol) but good for memory/metabolism if done sparingly (1 cup/8oz a day at 10:30-11am)

Coffee is associated with lower incidents of many diseases, and it also contains antioxidants, while boosting metabolism, etc.

Nothing at all wrong with coffee.... if you can tolerate it.

There is a reason the primary ingredient in most pre-workout supplements is caffeine.

The mental stimulation and focus is great for working out if you can tolerate as adam said and I have seen some studies that have shown the caffeine can help increase blood flow but if I recall correctly (can dig for study if needed) the required caffeine amount for an actual boost in performance was rather high, like 2-3 cups before you workout. Which I do anyway

Don't let the broscience scare you into not doing things you enjoy.

    All agreed.

My question was more towards the timing of when it's best, obviously don't be having it at night or directly post workout

There's actually evidence that post-workout coffee can help recovery

I am probably a terrible person to answer this question as I drink it all the time and feel absolutely no negatives or benefits from it, doesn't keep me awake or aid in any performance.

However here is a scientific analysis of studies looking into caffeine:-

    https://examine.com/supplements/caffeine/

Have a look how it aids the performance you are interested in and the study should aid in the amount consumed.

ive heard long term cortisol effects would outweight the small positives.. but that's just directly post workout.

again, nothing hard on paper research but just what I've heard, kinda makes sense.. prolonged chronic elevated cortisol could hurt your recovery

Same here, I drink copious amounts. The only thing I find is that it curbs my appetite. Apart from that I can't say it helps me mentally or physically. The biggest benefit probably comes from getting off my arse to boil the kettle and make one.

That is basically my cardio session any help during a cut :-)

It taste damn good as well. Only problem comes when their is a cake or biscuit sitting close by as they make a great pairing. Saying that it goes great with any food..... Reminder to myself move the kettle into the shed or something makes it less tempting to snack.

The only legit negative i can think of with any meaningful effect would be if you drink it after a certain time and it affects your sleep.

Yes you're right, however for the last 18 months I've managed to resist the wife's biscuit barrel, even though it's opposite the kettle and made of GLASS so you can see everything inside. But I admit a few squares of chocolate make coffee taste even nicer <3

I believe that if you drink it regularly, it doesn't have much of a benefit but if you were to stop drinking it, it would have negatives (withdrawal). if you want to use for performance, you might have to cycle off it now and again.

Yep, acute stress in general can be good because it causes adaptations. Chronic stress is the killer.

Probably goes with anything that has an addictive (nicotine) substance to it?

Good to know though, I enjoy having coffee at work. 8oz once a day at 10-11am seems to be legit and bonus my metabolism.

Seems like the biggest issue are people that drink gallons of this stuff daily
