As any good reality TV show knows you create a cliff hanger for the second season term and hit the announcement with a musical sting. You just don't wrap up storylines like this.

This whole unmasking thing was pretty incoherent to begin with. As far as I can tell, the whole controversy is that Biden and other administration officials would read intelligence reports during the course of their job and, when they see a name that has been 'masked' in the report, they would sometimes ask someone to 'unmask' the name so that they could better understand the report in context.

There doesn't seem to be any allegation that the underlying surveillance itself was improper. There doesn't seem to be any allegation that the information in the intelligence briefings was leaked or misused in some political way.

I can't prove it, but I'm pretty sure that the only reason why President Trump and the right wing media got all worked up about this is because the word "unmask" sounds sinister. Of course, the scariness of a word is not really a good predicate for a criminal investigation.

So, you don't believe that the dossier that was funded by Hillary was a fabrication, when Hillary, the opposing political party paid for it to be fabricated? I don’t like anonymous sources just for the hell of it. Anonymous sources wouldn’t fly in court, after all, where facing the accuser is a big deal.

But clearly, anonymous sources have their place. Contrary to what some people might want to sell you, we can trust most journalists, at least as far as the provision of a specific fact from an anonymous source goes. And the alternatives is, quite simply, we don’t otherwise get the fact.

If you have an alternative way to protect whistleblowers or encourage the free flow of information away from very, very powerful individuals without compromising the livelihood or safety of someone sharing that info, please present it.

I will be the last person to defend Hillary Clinton, but bogus? I guess, if we ignore the arrests, indictments, convictions, Mueller report, Senate Intelligence Committee report, etc.

ETA: I am speaking to Russian interference, not collusion.

ETA: And to answer what may be your next question, no I don’t think President Trump nor his campaign conspired with Russia in the 2016 election. A more grey area is the obstruction of justice. What Mueller said is that Trump's actions could be inferred to be obstruction, but those same actions (ie firing members of his executive branch) are a part of his constitutional power as president, so obstruction could only be charged if it were proven that President Trump was acting with the corrupt intent of inhibiting the investigation. Since this could not be proven, Mueller could not recommend charging him with obstruction, but could not exonerate him either.

Mueller laid out the evidence he found and then punts to congress and says "I can't charge him, but I will not exonerate him so this is on you guys to decide what you want to do here."

He also rather clearly lays out precedent for obstructing justice without a crime having been committed as well as his opinions on whether the President is above the law.
