So you got Rousey who was one of the biggest attractions and a crossover star, coming in off a bad ko loss and a long layoff, mind full of demons, and who do they put her straight in with?
Now you may say sell nobody knew Nunes was that good back then, but the thing is, it's the matchmakers job to know.
Rondas first few fights back should have been creampuffs and girls who were weak to her style,. I think they left a lot of money on the table when it came to RR and I say that as someone who was not a fan of hers. It was bad business by the UFC.

UFC doesn't give easy fights to anyone once they've made a name for themself
It's a terrible model if you're a fighter but it's great for the UFC's profits
They feed any and everyone to the dogs by putting them in the biggest fights that can possibly be made, always
They could give a fuk less where you're at in your career if they can capitalize off your nameLast edited by DefaultMode; 03-21-2021 at 09:36 PM.

I called it back then that it was a terrible matchup for Ronda, but a lot of people didn't really know how good Nunes was. Amanda had just beat the crap out of Meisha so bad she wanted to retire and said she'd never been hit that hard before.
Ronda should've fought Pena for a comeback fight. Pena fights like a dumb brawler and I think Ronda could've caught her in a submission. Ronda actually could've rematched Holly with a better gameplan than moving forward running into punches like a retard.R135

Ronda Rousey was a legit star back in the day bringing in some massive PPV numbers and money for the UFC.
Before Rousey, Nunes beat Shevchenko and absolutely demolished Miesha Tate. It wasn't exactly a secret that Nunes was legit and that Rousey was a terrible striker. I think many people knew at the time Nunes would whoop that ass.
In hindsight, perhaps yeah, maybe a rematch with Holm? Miesha Tate? But honestly the game kinda passed her by at this point although I still think she'd be top 5, but that's moreso a testament to how weak 135 is. Women now are better at grappling and can defend an armbar (lol) as opposed to 10 years ago. They are also better at striking and Rousey got exposed. They probably could have milked Rousey for 1 or 2 more fights but her reign at the top was clearly over. Also lol @ Rousey not doing press events.positivity brah crew

Joe Rogan's non stop hyperbole when they were really gassing her up was absolutely nauseating...
"Ronda isn't just one of those special once in a generation type athletes. She's a once in human history, a once in the universe type of athlete. She is the greatest women's mma fighter and possibly just the greatest mma fighter of all time period"
Imagine saying that about a one trick pony who can't even throw (much less take) a proper punch.
So satisfying.

What's crazy in hindsight is the run Ronda went on knowing what we know now about her weaknesses.
Just goes to show you how much of the game is mental + how her competition did not have the ability whatsoever to deal with Olympic level judo.
I thought she started to look small for the weight class her last few fights too.

This.
It was honestly one of the funniest miscalculations on their part. Ronda lost and the UFC said damn... Holly must have just been the stylistic problem. So when Nunes became champ they thought it was THE opportunity to bring Ronda back. Wouldn't have to face Holly and they could get her to be the champion and thus money making machine she previously was. They didn't know what they had in Nunes and it backfired in ... well... Rondas face... over and over.
Ronda was to women's MMA what guys like Chuck Liddell, Rich Franklin, etc. were to men's MMA. Fighters who had talent and all, but were slightly ahead of their time and benefitted from other fighters lack of talent, well roundedness, etc. Its just the progression of the sport, and the athletes.Everything depends upon execution; having just a vision is no solution.
Performance and performance alone dictates the predator in any food chain.

Your criticism of Chuck and Rich is wrong because it would also apply to Anderson Silva. They were much better than what you give them credit for.
They did benefit from top talent being split between the UFC and Pride. Even then, their opponents were far beyond the skill levels of Ronda's opponents.

In the UFC's defense, Ronda didn't even try to grapple Nunes.
She looked awful on the feet vs both Holm and Nunes. Winged punches and left her chin exposed. Zero discipline to fight to her strengths.
Yeah those are decent comparisons. Chuck and Rich were bigger, stronger athletes who could defend a takedown and land power strikes against the grinders they faced on their way to the top.
Evolution/the PRIDE acquisition exposed them (still had great careers though).
All different styles but you could say the same for Hughes and maybe BJ too.
I agree with this. Silva got a lot of opponents who couldn't capitalize on his wrestling issues but his striking was world class and on another level than Liddell/Franklin.

And I guess judo is mainly upper body throws/trips and much less effective once you've eaten a shot (as opposed to how some fighters still hold onto a single leg while recovering from being wobbled).
Alright I stand corrected.
Nunes/Holly are superior fighters and could match her strength/athleticism but Ronda still did not fight smart and to her strengths in either.

Not true. She couldnt get through the punches to enter the clinch, cos she has no striking defence. Same thing in her fight with Holly. When she faced soccermoms, it didn't matter, cos she could walk through their punches straight in to the clinch. Against a legit striker she was hurt bad every time she got tagged.
