Hospitalizations this time of year go way up. Every year. Yes, thousands of hospitalizations are Covid cases adding to that. There is a lot of overlap. People who'd be in the hospital right now if Covid didn't exist. A higher ratio of flu cases cause hospitalization (about 1 in 70-80) than SARS-Cov2 has (about 1 in 200) but of course Covid has a higher death ratio and spreads easier.

Kind of a bad analogy as in the whole of 2019 only 36,000 people died in the US from auto accidents, yet it's still a priority for national and local officials to reduce the number of deaths. There are quite a few laws designed to reduce highway deaths from seatbelt mandates, prohibitions against driving drunk or under the influence of drugs, mandatory auto manufacturer safety standards, traffic speed limit enforcement, etc.

One would say that quite a bit of personal liberties are curtailed in the effort to reduce highway deaths.

And that's for a cause of death that kills less people in one entire year than covid kills in one month. So if anything, your analogy would indicate that more laws and mandates should be enacted to slow the death rate of covid. Interesting hot take.

What a senseless analogy. Odds are you’ll be in 3 or 4 car crashes in your life despite the tens of thousands of times you’re in a car. Of those crashes the odds are 1 in 100 it will be fatal. Plus car crashes aren’t contagious. And yet billons are spent to make cars safer.
