Absolutely. Even if you won't be recruited for firms, you can still make good connections, get involved with industry groups/meetups, and just do all around good networking. There are so many instances where people get a job not because they are the most qualified, but because of who they knew. Getting your foot in the door can often be the hardest part. I would join groups and get active in discussions, sharing industry related articles, etc.
Happy to help bro
In addition to pro giving more insights, you get unlimited inmails. A lot of people cannot receive regular messages, and only accept inmails. I would start the one month free trial when you are ready to go hard as fuk on apps.
Could you elaborate on what you are rambling on about.535 deadlift.

Um you do realize the entire existence of Linkedin is predicated on the idea of creating a virtual resume and space to connect with other professionals, right? if you aren't going to put employment info there is no reason to sign up. And if you don't use it, you are holding yourself back.

he's right
brb post your resume for EVERYONE to see
brb you can see that the person that viewed this person also viewed these people
brb jealous ex co-worker knows where you work, can bad mouth you to other contacts
brb hackers can steal info from the service
brb LinkedIn will spam everyone in your address book if you're not careful
etc
Also Micro$soft now owns it.
I deleted my profile a few years ago. Had over 500+ contacts and out of that I would say there were not too many people that I knew or would classify as real friends.
Linkedin allows companies to gather data on you including who you know. Do you really want your ex-coworkers talking about you without controlling the dialog? It's like providing references that might say anything even. No thanks.

Well you chicken littles are more than welcome to avoid it, but I will reiterate - if you are so paranoid that someone will sabotage you, you need to ask what the fuk you are doing wrong in life and what kind of people you are associating with. The type of behavior you are describing is absolute worst case scenario and even in bad breakups that is not going to happen to 99.9% of people. Its just not reality. But you are only hurting yourself by not taking advantage of available resources.535 deadlift.

Depending on what field you're going into, you may / may not really benefit from having one.
Reading through this thread, not a single doctor, nurse, lawyer was seen that day. Mostly IT, administration, consulting, computer related, engineers seen posting itt.
I'm super old school and I still believe nothing beats cold calling, emailing, meeting face to face, just putting yourself out there.
The whole concept of LI it's almost like ********, let me show off what I got / can do kind of thing. I'll rather keep to myself. Luckily I'm also going into a field where I could land a great gig without LI but as things change eventually LI will be the new norm.
It's unfortunate but it's the way it is...

I've actually considered this. I have a strong LI account, but I'm assuming not many people use it around here. I've had Amazon contact me once for a job, but that's it. Would be interested in adding people that actually contribute to this section and provide positive and good advice. No *******s.

Meh, I wouldn't mind. I have fairly loose standards for accepting invites.
- If I don't know you but we have a lot of mutual connections I'll likely add you.
- If we're in the same field or if you're in a field I'm trying to get into I'll add you.
- If you're not too far from where I live or work somewhere where I'd like to work, I'll add you.Oakland Raiders--Toronto Raptors--Toronto Blue Jays--San Jose Sharks

I'll make a new thread in the next few days on instructions and what not. I'll have to finish my account first.
My idea is we can all add each other as connections. If we share similar industries, we can recommend one another and what not. It will boost everyone's perceived value to a recruiter or potential employer. I think it's a win-win.
I think everyone posting ITT is level headed and serious and I don't mind getting this thing going.*United States Space Force Vet*

I thought about making a LinkedIn thread a few years ago, but there wasn't a career sub-forum and I didn't want to put it in the main misc because there would be too much trolling. I'd be in srs. I work in technology / engineering. If anyone wants to connect with me on LI PM me.
I've been traditionally a bit restrictive on who I added. I at least have spoken to all my contacts irl before, but I only have like 60-70 connections which is a bit on the low end. Do you guys that have 500+ just accept all requests / send cold invites to random people in your industry you don't know?
I understand you feel that way, but it's 2017 and OP is right. For most white collar professional jobs, having a decent LinkedIn profile is pretty much essential. I have a friend who works in high finance and he was saying that HR looks for your LinkedIn profile when you apply and not having one is considered a pretty big red flag. Anyway you can set privacy settings to restrict who can see your profile and connections.

BUMP for a worthwhile thread.
For you LinkedIn pros - I am graduating in May, and I already have a job lined up at the firm I worked for as an intern this past summer. The paperwork has been signed, etc. so it's official as it can be at this stage. I am wondering if there is anyway for me to add that to my profile. Like is there an option for me to say "... will be working at XXX Firm starting in June 2016." Because when I try to add it to experience, it doesn't let me add dates in the future.

I'd be down for the connection exchange and endorsement idea. Perhaps a short review of previous 'work' done for one another to go along with endorsing a skill (obviously something believable). Reviewed and approved by both parties before posting online. Would be massively beneficial for others and myself.
Needs to look legit though.

I'm pretty sure there is no built-in option on the site for adding future jobs like that. You could just use the year but not specify a month and include that information in your job title, then when the time actually comes update your start date and job title. For example:
Sandwich Engineer (Starting June 2017)
Burger King Restaurants

I appreciate this thread. LinkedIn has been monumental for my career - I know I would not be where I am at without it.
I think what you are saying works amazingly in attracting recruiters to take a look at your profile.I think it works a lot better when you have good job stability, work at a company and have a desirable/needed job responsibility.
If you are struggling to get recruiters to hit you up - be proactive. Especially for sales, show that you can do your research and add value. Find the person you think is hiring for any online listings you have, reach out introduce yourself and sell your value to the company. Just being proactive and taking that extra step can help you stand out.
