    Question:

I have "connected" my Myfitnesspal.com account to my bodymedia.com account, or at least that is what it says. In the advertising for this feature, it states "Automatically update your BodyMedia FIT food log with your MyFitnessPal diary meal totals and nutrients." So I entered some data into the MFP site for yesterday and this morning, submitted entry, went back to the bodymedia.com account, refreshed, and there's nothing.

Do I need to somehow push the data from MFP to BM? Or do I need to pull the data from MFP using BM? Or does this automatically occur, such as the BM system refreshes and pulls data every (let's just say) 30 minutes? Or do I need to enter everything via the MPF app for my phone?

So many options! So confused! My blond is showing.

    (Thanks for the guidance, btw.)

EDIT: I went to my mobile app for MFP, and it stated something about BodyMedia.com calorie adjustment? Then I went back to my BM account, and my carrots are there!!! Woooo! Things are starting to look up!

This is the food summary from the BodyMedia.com Activity Manager.

I don't remember BM providing so much detail yesterday, but I could be wrong. Either way, that IS the data I put into the MyFitnessPal.com account, and I love the break out.

My phone is still having issues with the Link feature of the blue tooth. My honey is going to play with it a bit this weekend and try to fix it. If it still does not work properly, then I am swapping it for a new one. If the problem persists, then I am swapping it for a Core (non-blue tooth) version.

No, Pharty and Swoosh, no tests. This is just info that I wish I had prior to starting the whole Body Media process.

Of course you keep your angel status, Rickie!

I have a question: I worked out and walked pup today, and today's calorie burn was ~2100 calories. So does that make 2100 calories my maintenance? If Based on what I have eaten (and drank) today, I have ~550 calorie deficit today. I REALLY want to lose weight. Is a 500 cal/day deficit okay?

Let me put it to you this way: I just went shopping today, and I had to buy THE biggest pair of jeans I could find. I haven't had to buy that size for 6 years. It was about 6 years ago that I did my first 40-day juice fast followed by eating ~<800 calories/day, which I know screwed up my metabolism. I am DESPERATE to lose weight, and I am afraid that I may go back to my old ways of eating very little. I know, I know. I lost 1.5 - 2 months because of the boot. I will get through this. Thanks for the advice.

On a brighter note...I did my first dead lifts and lunges since I broke my ankle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woooo!

    Dead lifts
    40 x 8
    40 x 8
    40 x 8
(Doc said to start with lesser weights.)

    Underhand grip lat pull-down
    60 x 8
    80 x 8
    80 x 8
    80 x 8

    Push ups
    BW x 4
    BW x 5
    BW x 5

    Swiss ball leg curl
    BW x 8
    BW x 8
    BW x 8

    Chest Press
    40 x 8
    40 x 8
    40 x 8

    Lunges (back leg on chair)
    BW x 8
    BW x 8
    BW x 8

I could have gone further, but I didn't want to not be able to walk tomorrow. I am already starting to feel soreness, and it feels SOOOOOO good.

    In other news:
I will be visiting y'alls' journals soon. Life has just been so crazy. I am trying to start my owner business and spend a lot of my time building spreadsheets and organizing and so on. Today we met with our CPA to figure out what we need to do to move forward.

The thesis is coming along slowly but surely.

I am still suffering from senioritis. When your freshly-promoted boss tells you the reason she's qualified is because she's "a marine's wife and a mother," I am just ready to throw my hands up and walk. No offense to marine's wives; I grew up in the military, so I get that it's difficult. But good lord, just let me do my job without having to worry about you inviting yourself to all of my meetings so you can take credit for everything I do. Grrrrr.

Enough grumbling. I did DEAD LIFTS! Woooooo!

Yeahhhhh deadlifts, happydance.jpg for finally getting to do some fun stuff! I use a 500cal/day deficit for cutting personally and it's fine, depends on the person really. I don't think 500 less is extreme, seems to be the norm around here, just be careful that you do indeed get enough (like some days you'll probably burn 2600 but your new toy will let you know. )

Best of luck with the business idea, I hope it works out!

    Thanks for the info, Hobbes!

    Ha-HUGE victory for me today!!!!!!!!

My negative pull-ups are no longer negatives!!!! I can hang there without going down at all for 8 seconds 3 times. I will keep that up for another month or so and then I will start working on real pull-ups. A month and a half ago I didn't think I would be able to just hang. Good lord, who knew how the body can improve no matter the age!

    This morning's workout:

    Warm-up: Walk pup

    Squats
    40 x 8
    2 x 8
(I am already experiencing DOMS in my legs from the dl's, so there was some sharp pain. I will have to adjust my workout schedule to accommodate this.)

    Rows
    20 x 8
    20 x 8
    20 x 8
    (Need to increase next time)

Prone cobra with feet holding up the swiss ball
    120 seconds x 3

    Overhead press
    40 x 8
    40 x 8
    40 x 8
(I almost failed at that last rep, but I pushed through. My arms still feel like noodles. mmmmm...noodles...)

    Non-negative pull-ups (woooooo!)
    8 secs x 3

I am going to take a dress back today and exchange it for another pair of jeans that are one size smaller. I could fit into them, but I was muffin' topping. I think they will fit just fine in a month or two (plus they're on sale). I actually have faith in myself now!

    Body Media Update

They should just fess up and call that thing Reality Check Media. Here I thought "Gee golly whiz, I worked out. I KNOW that I burned like 50,000 calories in that one session!" Ya, notsomuch.jpg It's really showing me what my maintenance is, and it's showing me how to adjust my caloric intake when I am NOT working out. It's extremely eye opening! I feel that I have already gotten my $'s worth in 3 days.

Now that whole blue-tooth feature is still a pain. My honey hasn't worked on it yet, so I don't know whether I will have to send it back or not. However, I have found it EXTREMELY useful to sync it to my phone in the middle of the day while out and see how many calories I have already burned. It helped me decide NOT to go out to eat, because I would have been consuming more than what I am burning. Amazing.

Thank you again, Rickie, for pointing out that I can link myfitnesspal.com and bodymedia.com. It's SO useful now!

Today I stack wood. We had 2 cords delivered (which means ol' man winter has my permission to let it snow now...what do you mean we're back in the 70s!?) and my honey was going to get the tractor with trailer to haul some to the back. I said, "No way. Wheel barrel and strength. I need the exercise."

Have a great day all! I am off to stalk Pharty's journal to ogle the Oreo doughnuts again.

^^What she said! They say that you need to burn 3500 calories to lose the equivalent of a pound. If you are eating at a 500cal/day deficit, that would be 1lb/week.

GOOD! Don't lose faith! You have made huge progress (nevermind the scale - look at your strength gains!) and you will continue to make huge progress. The weight will come off, but it's gonna take time - and (if you're like me) a lot of second-guessing yourself. haha. I believe in you!!

Hahahaha - I feel the exact same way! I'll go to the gym and feel like I've absolutely killed myself, and I come home and the BM is all like, "Hey, Rickie! Nice session! You burned... 200 calories!" Haha. Stupid, honest machine.

You're right, Rickie. It's too honest. lol

    Quick Body Media update:

The Body Media app seems to have been designed for iPhones - NOT androids. Many people with Android phones have had a LOT of problems with owners being continuously pinged over and over and over again requesting a PIN for the blue tooth device. Some reviewers report that when talking to customer service they are told that the blue tooth feature really only works with ~12 phones. My recommendation to you prior to buying the Link version of the arm band is to call Body Media and confirm that your phone is one of the 12 that they know works well with it.

A lady who has the same phone as mine - Samsung Galaxy S3 - reported the same issue as I have:

"S3 having some problems Well, this finally worked for my incredible. Now I have an S3 and it says paired and syncs up fine, but every 5 seconds my phone is asking for my pin. Looking into it to see if it's a phone problem or this app. Since uninstalling the app, the phone has stopped asking for the pin, and the bluetooth connection says that it's paired.... Definitely an app problem. Every 5 seconds it asks me for a pin, and whether I hit cancel or enter the pin, it connects fine. Very annoying. I have to log out of the app to get it to stop. If I want to check the data, I have to log in again."

Others have suggested unpairing every BT device from the phone, then loading the BM as the primary BT device. We tried something similar and it still did not take care of the issue. The lady's comments (above) seems to be the ONLY work around for me: log in & log out EVERY time using it. It's kind of a thorn in my side, but I am trying to weigh the pros and cons of everything. The con is that it seems to take an act of congress to get the app to behave appropriately. The pro is having real-time data at my fingertips. I am not always going to have my computer and cord on hand, now am I?

I am not completely happy with BM's willingness to release an app riddled with so many issues. Shame on Body Media. If they were willing to do that, they should have released the app under a "beta test" guise - not as a final product. A little expectation management like that would have made things a little more tolerable.

On another note, since I have my Myfitnesspal.com and BodyMedia.com accounts linked, there's a nuance that I just discovered: In return for MyFitnessPal.com sending Body Media daily consumption data, Body Media will send exercise (calories burned) data to myfitnesspal.com. MFP.com will then credit me with those burned calories and adjust my daily goals telling me that I've "earned those extra calories today!" The primary reason that I use MFP.com is that I can see how many protein, carbs, fats, and calories I still need to consume, but when it keeps fooling around with my goals, I have to stop and think about how much I really should be consuming. If I just went by the bottom line, I would be eating WAY more than I ought. The work around is that I have to go the Exercise tab of MPF.com and delete the entry that BM.com entered.

So many work arounds! So many nuances!

The arm band is still really useful. Yesterday's final calorie deficit (looking at it today) was 800 calories, not 500. So I need to really pay attention over the next few weeks to make sure that I don't go into starvation mode. I don't want my metabolism to take a hit again.

I realize I am going on and on about this, but like I said this is data that I wish I could have found prior to buying it. It was have made my expectations and the set up process a bit more tolerable.

Hey Fizz! Soundsl like you are exploring more into the device than I ever did lol.

Some words of caution when using this to determine how much you should eat based off of the arm band: I would pick one calorie goal and stick to it, don't worry if one day you have a 400 cal deficit and the next its 800, as long as your weekly deficit is what you are aiming for that's all that matters. When I first got the thing I was disappointed that my weight loss wasn't moving as fast as I thought because I was looking at the small picture not the big. Don't worry about going into to "starvation" mode if you have a couple of days with a larger deficit, there will be days where that is negated by having a smaller one. Jumping calorie amounts day to day isn't necessary for weight loss and its easier to know I am going to eat x amount every day, easier to set macros up and plan meals. If you have an increase in activity that lasts longer than a week, then up cals accordingly if it affects hunger and makes it harder to stay on plan. Workouts have a minor influance on total cals burned, it will be your day to day tasks that will up that by a noticeable margin

Nice job in getting the full workouts in again I bet wit your determination you will be fitting in those smaller jeans in no time!
If this were easy, everyone would walk around ripped.

    Ahhhhhhhhhh, I see. Thank you!

No test, Pharty, but I am coveting those doughnuts.

    Okay, LAST chart.

Alrighty, that should be enough Body Media from me. Now that I have a work-around and have linked myfitnesspal.com, I am pretty darn happy.

Now I am going to build a nice fire with my freshly stacked pile of wood and relax. Who cares if it's nearly 70*? I earned it!

Yay!!! Congrats on the hangs! Awesome job, Red!!

I think that's the biggest rude awaking people have regarding their cals and cals burned in the gym. People way underestimate their caloric intake and way overestimate their cals burned in the gym. Having a good understanding of all that will help you be successful in reaching your goals.

I agree with what Echo said there. In a round about way, you would be doing carb/calorie cycling, which is what I do. It does take a lot of planning and tweaking, but if you follow Echo's suggestions, I think that's a good route to go. The body tends to adapt very quickly, so by "confusing" it, it tends to respond.

    Yeah for smaller jeans!!!
Caring about what people think of you is useless. Most people don't even know what they think of themselves.

I am not in the smaller jeans yet, but *fingers crossed* that it will be soon!

Thank you so much for the carb-cycling tip! We have never heard of that and have been reading article after article after article. This sounds like what we want! I am not a fan of bulking, and I know you mentioned that you haven't really bulked either - and you look amazing! So honey and I are going to try it out.

He's super excited since he's Mr. Chef. So we talked about it, and we're going to come up with a list of high-, medium-, and low-carb foods. He's going to approach it like Chopped. lol So we'll see.

Quick question: It is recommended to schedule the high-carb day on the tough work-out days. If I workout at 6am, should I eat the high-carbs the night before or the day of? Thanks!

btw, we are resorting to buying a whole turkey each week in order to reach our protein goals.

My legs are in so much pain from the DLs on Saturday. They hurt from above the knee through the inner thighs and up my bum. I am assuming that means that I did them well. I am glad that I did not keep on until I actually "felt" something. Rather I did what I knew I could do and stopped so I could make sure my legs could handle it. Blah, blah, blah. I am over-analyzing things.

In other news, Pup loves turkey day!!!

Hey Red!!! SO you're liking your bug?? I may have missed it- but what's your calorie burn looking like so far? And I think carb cycling has it's place like anything else- but I don't think you really need to implement something like that until you're leaner/stuck. But if it's something you think will help you stick to your diet- then I'm interested to see how it treats you

I agree with Lori with the carb cycling, you should be able to lose with a standard deficit without manipulating carbs or cals. Once people are within 5-10lbs of their goal it can help with getting rid of stubborn fat. Of course if it helps with diet compliance than go for it, the best diet is one you can stick to

I think the caloric deficit average will continue to decline during the week when I am not moving as much (thanks cubie!). Any tips are welcome.

btw, seeing how the average works shows me what you all were talking about. I need to focus on a big picture versus the daily picture.

    Hey Fizz~

I agree with all the posters who have encouraged you to think in terms of weekly calories / deficits versus focusing on daily figures - else you'll drive yourself crazy!

    Keep up the good work!

Haha - love that you can pull in a Care Bear reference. I have Cheer Bear jammies that my mom got me for Christmas one year. Yes I was an adult when she bought them for me (I've only had them for a couple of years) - but my mom called me Care Bear as a kid, I even had it on my high school cheerleading jacket - how dorky is that?

My hubs is going shopping today for our turkeys and chickens. He was starting to debate if we could eat a whole turkey or if we'd get tired of eating it and it would go to waste. I literally jumped up from my chair with the "NOOOO you HAVE to get a turkey!!!"

Exciting stuff on the body media results - I seriously want one for Christmas but since Santa is bringing the family a new Xbox I think the budget is going to be a little too tight. I will just drool as you share all of your fun results - love the graphs - keep em coming!

You're right! I had the two numbers switched. Also, I hadn't run the numbers this morning, so it hadn't captured anything beyond 8pm last night. Therefore, thanks to the blue tooth feature (and there's the value added ), I reran my numbers and my actual burn for Tuesday was 2196, not ~1700. (I corrected the post.)

Oh man, if only I could go back in time and once again experience being a Costco virgin and walk in there for the first time with my mega cart and AMEX in hand, ready to run down the elderly and small children just to get to that glorious meat cooler that much faster. The chicken is AWESOME, brb buying 30 chicken legs as one pack but pack is split up into individual freezer pouches. Joke's on them, I eat 30 chicken legs per day.
