They work on biotech facilities , biotech is one of the biggest industries here and one of the best paying as well

ABC and ibew have a backlog of about 3 years of candidates. I applied to both and ABC hasn’t even scheduled me for the interview yet.

Got a 90 for the ibew , you need about a 95 to get in. It normally takes about 2 years after your orientation to get your first call.

Most companies here don’t hire off the street and if they do you have to have your ET card (pay for your school yourself).

Minimum 2-3 years of experience almost universally on the open shop end and the pay for commercial and residential is the same. 13-15/$hr. 30/$hr for journeyman.

The only reason I got my first one back in March was because the guy wanted me to do civil work as well ( had concrete expierence) and it was 99% travel so he couldn’t find people willing to travel that much.

COVID happen , Tesla pulled out on all our contracts, company tanked (small company).

The only reason I got the one I have now is because it’s a shady mostly residential shop. He has guys working there for minimum wage with a lot more experience than I have. He makes you pick up conduit , solar panels , etc from CED in your own vehicle and tells his guys school/licenses/ apprenticeship is useless.

He does that to keep them trapped there at very low pay.


Come move to San Diego for a few years and see how “easy” it is to get into the actual skilled trades as an outsider before you tell me that I’m just “worthless” and that I should just “blown my brains out”.

You made it sound like I jump jobs every month. I agree though , don’t bank on the ibew though. Very location dependent. Some places even non union like the ABC is hard to get into.

Go to school for your trade you stupid tradie. Go apply for fafsa and get into a trade school. Then you can get a decent job without having to cuck yourself working for peanuts building experience. I am going to school retard. I’m paying for classes from WECA. No cares if you have an ET card if you don’t have much experience.

You have to to be LEGALLY employed. My current employer doesn’t care.

I meant the actual work is probably easy, mentally not physically. For older tradies their limitations are physical, not knowledge. The job market is fuked for sure regardless of your industry.

Or u just find one you want to go to and move. Use student loans or gigs to pay for necessities and get out in a few months doubling your income. I'm not trying to be overly harsh on you but I've seen these threads pop up constantly since you moved to San Diego. You could make it a lot easier if you just committed to schooling.
