Well the penny stock market has morphed. OTC's are dead. Small caps are on fire. Telling the average person to start out trading futures is like handing a retarded person a gun and showing them how to point it at themselves and pull the trigger.

The keyword is leverage. Doesn't matter what you trade but trading on leverage is a near guaranteed way to lose. The financial markets involve risk is the bottom line. Majority of people will lose because they never try to learn, just jump in blind.

I am just telling you the truth. You aren't gonna make shiot on that sort of garbage. Either focus on OTC's when they are liquid like a FNMA, FMCC or stick to the small caps and big big boards if you expect to make money.

Don't invest in penny stocks. Only trade them. The amount of money you have makes a difference because many brokers have different amounts. If you don't have much money Etrade is okay however if you have more money then a broker like Speedtrader is better.

An index fund, either ETF or mutual fund is a good idea for somebody with no experience. Don't buy an actively managed mutual fund since they are expensive and don't consistently outperform index funds which cost much less.

Unless you are willing to spend a year or two learning how to trade like some of the guys in here have done, I would just buy SPY which is just known as "the market." The problem is the market is quite high right now, but it is also broke out to knew all time highs recently which means the sky is the limit, but entering on some sort of pull back is smart.
