Bradford/Lowry reagent kits are cheap as **** compared to other protein quant assays.

Most protein from big name companies is alright, it's the smaller ones I don't trust.

I know scivation always talks about the tests they make all of their products pass before they even think about releasing them and i am sure the same goes for any reputable company.

Indeed, QA is very important for Scivation and extensive tests are always being done on the products so you get exactly whats on the label.

IMO if its too good to be true.. why risk it?

Meh don't know if this proves anything. Bradford/Lowry assay determines the ammount of protein present by binding the coomassie dye to the tertiary structure of the protein (wikipedia). If APW is really pure hydrolized whey as dym-100 is there should only be amino acids present. Amino acids are the Legos that build protein they are not themselves protein. I would be very curious to see the results if they ran dym-100 along side APW. Not defending the stuff just don't think this is conclusive.

Theoretically, yes. But if the whole protein was lysed then the hydrophobic amino acid residues should interact with the binding capabilities of the dye. The A280 is a much more believable test since it would actively measure aromatic ring structures in protein. Even if it was a hydrolysed protein, it should contain equivalent amounts of those residues, and a 5-10x difference seems disconcerting.

I didn't use the wrong test. It says in the Reddit thread that I used a detergent-compatible Lowry assay, not a Bradford one. The Lowry assay works under strongly alkaline conditions, so it doesn't depend on the protein's tertiary structure. I also took absorbance measurements @ 280 nm. Both these would work fine on amino acids or proteins. There's no reason why the APW powder should have failed both those tests when the ON whey passed them if it really had as much protein in it as it says it does.

And I'm not a shill, though I totally understand why it looks that way. I'm not repeating anything that isn't already in the Reddit thread about this. This would also be an odd way for someone to shill for ON, although I don't really think their reputation needs boosting by some random internet person with one post (now two posts). I just used it because it's what I had on hand, it's reputable, and I needed a whey product to compare the APW whey to. The BSA standard alone was insufficient since it reacts to the assays a bit differently than whey.

The modified Lowry assay kit (DC protein assay from Bio-Rad) is a few hundred bucks, but it's good for LOTS of tests. A guy on Reddit has offered to have people send him their protein powder so he can test it. I can't link to it since I only have two posts, but just Google "offering broscience service"; it's the first hit.

As stated though, I put more stock in the A280 testing than Lowry. Way cheaper too if you have access to a spec.
