I had a local shop do the welding as I was new to welding at the time, but I procured everything. I am running stock gears still (3.73) which is kind of a bitch but I am pretty good with the clutch. It is DEFINITELY in need of new gears though, I am going to 4.88's since I am running 35" KM2s now. The 3.73 was already stock on the 8.8 I found so I lucked out and didn't have to re-gear initially.

How did you find the 8.8, how much did it cost etc? I can buy one with custom gearing/TJ welding online for about $1200. Seems expensive but its from a trusted vendor...
How are 33s on 3.73s? I don't think I'd ever want to go above that.
Yeah those are what I'm going to get once I do my axle swap/lift. For now though I just plasti-dipped my stock wheels

These wheels are really popular here in AZ, we do a lot of rock crawling which means our wheels gets lots of love, all over the sidewalls and it is important to have strong wheels too. I have been running these for ~3 years, have dinged everysingle one of them up all over, but they hold form and hold air good. They are also a pretty good value.

You can find Ford 8.8's all over at local junk yards, they came stock in a lot of the 90's era Ford Explorers. I did some research and found a few at a close yard that had brakes and everything. The one I foud had the drum brakes, 3.73s, I think it was around 80k miles but in great shape. I bought it from the junkyard for $250. You also need a kit or two of parts that is sold online, the total cost of parts for the swap INCLUDING axle, was only around $500 if I remember right. There are great write-ups online for doing the D35 -> 8.8 swap which should tell you everything you need to know.
If you don't know how to weld yourself, I would try and find a local shop, tell them what you want to do and find a price if you bring them the axle and all the parts. It cost me a few hundred to do the install, but I could have done it myself with the proper tools/welder.
The 33's on 3.73 really isn't that bad, this is how I learned how to wheel so I was very used to it - now I have 35's on the 3.73s its a little bit different. I can tell the difference, but honestly if you are good with feathering the clutch, I can still climb well (Straight Vertical) even with 3.73s & 35s though. When you do this, it puts more stress to the drivetrain though because it needs more gas and my climbing ratio is much lower than it could be. If you aren't doing lots of rock crawling (Wheels aired down to 10 lb and climbing huge vertical rocks), you will definitely be okay with 3.73 and 33's imo. I have successfully wheeled lots of hard stuff with it without much issue, It would take a near impossible climb for me to be killing the engine because my gears are too high.
