Dont even try compare it to playing basketball/soccer because doing those are fun, everyonen is game to play them and its not srs
But people that do powerlifting and risk injury and lift for no reason (not even financial gain) blow my mind. If you are an elite lifter and you are close to breaking state/national records, i get it. But if you are someone that has been powerlifting for 5 years and cant even deadlift 600lbs its time to give it up srs

A lot of people do. Or people do it to just see how strong they can get? I feel like that's a fun thing to work on. I sometimes train for max strength just to see what happens, like pursuing a bodyweight bench or something. And, as others have said, to increase maximal force output for sports.

But the rate of progression is still important. I see people on here powerlifting for 10 years and still only pulling 500, its ultimately a waste of time. Lifting for strength gains is fun, i like focusing on progressive overload as well as aesthetics, but solely lifting ONLY for strength whilst being a mediocre lifter aint it mane

Because if you have an ounce of test in your body, competition will always be fun.

-Setting goals to work towards achieving them.....gives the feeling of achievement and control in an otherwise mediocre and/or boring life.
-It's fun and gives the person a sense of community/belonging to something bigger than them
-Gives people something that they feel may differentiate them from the masses
-It's a hobby that requires planning, attention, commitment and dedication that when done correctly pays off with satisfaction.
-There literally is not end or state that you can get to where you will be "done" or have "completed" the project...which is yourself.
-Obviously everyone cant and wont/don't even want to be elite level.....most do it for the fun/sport/competition of it.
With your attitude....why even do anything if you're not top 1%....just LDAR

You have to evaluate if the goal is worth anything though. Brb setting goal to count all the cracks in the pavement for feeling of accomplishment. What does that actually get you.
And PL has a BIG cost in risk of injury and wear and tear on joints and tendons.
So with that huge cost I don’t see how PL can pass any reasonable cost/benefit analysis. It might be fun but surely you can get fun from other activities too like lifting moderate weight or other active stuff like conditioning work etc.

We get it. It's not worth it to you. So don't do it.
OP, it's like a men's softball/baseball league. Some men do that chit. It's a hobby. They go out, get some physical activity, talk chit, and then go out for beers after.
To me, that sucks ass and I would hate it, but I get it. It's a hobby.
You really can't wrap your brain around that it's fun for people and it gives them physical and mental goals to work toward?

Powerlifting is fun for those who find it fun regardless of how you personally feel about it. Some people think soccer is fun. Some think chess is fun. Some think counterstrike is fun. My point is, people compete because it's fun to test your skills against people no matter what you're into. Powerlifting is once such thing. Most people don't do the things they find fun to make money or break records, they do it because they enjoy it.
Your statements about injury or record setting is completely irrelevant.***The Misadventires of Gandalf the Black***
