    Went rock climbing today for the first time in like 5+ years, topped the hardest wall they had first try. Pull up strength plus hangs really helped compensate for lacking technique.

    No, not since 2 years ago when this thread was active lol. I generally prefer weight pullups to high rep stuff.

    It happens to me that when I focus on bw reps or max pull ups per time or whatever...you become good at one thing but bad on the others. It's very difficult to be good at all pull up variants.

    I have pretty strong grip with a lot of muscular endurance, but then I'm also heavy af right now too lol.

    That's what happens to me too, it's strange how max pulling for weighted pull ups doesn't translate that directly to bodyweight pull ups.

    Yeah, if you're weighing 200+lbs it's gonna be extremely difficult but you'll get an amazing workout.

    Did you guys always have your pull ups? I lost a ton of upper body strength but I don't have access to those classes anymore (circus) How would I go about training these. Is the machine at the gym where you can decrease the "help" useful or...should I just struggle till I get stronger?

    I've always been good at pullups from all the climbing I did as a kid.

    There are many ways you could work towards repping pullups.

    Lat Pulldown - Good for doing higher rep (5-12 reps) accessory work if you can't do reps with bw yet.
    Rubber band technique - this is a good one, it gives more help at the bottom of the pull up (where most ppl are weaker) and very little help at the top (strongest point). At the gym I used to go to they had 3 rubber bands of different resistance so you could go from a band that helps a lot and work towards the weakest band before going free bodyweight.
    Pullup assistance machine - most gyms have these, it allows you to progressively decrease assistance
    Negatives Start at top and lower yourself slowly. Do sets of 3-5 reps.
