I think my biggest issue with barbells is that I always do low reps. Like 3-5 reps and for whatever reason I get chest strains when I habitually do > 3 x 5. With dumbbells though I can increase ROM and TUT but never get hurt/strains. At this point, I just need to lift again. It has been months

Good point. There's less temptation with dumbbells to target low reps. While low reps are obviously great for targeting maximal strength your joints take a beating and you can burn out after a while and start going backwards, increase the risk of injury, etc. Increasing the volume with dumbbells can lead to more hypertrophy and bigger muscles generally means greater potential for strength gains down the road. That's how I've always approached it. Build strength with sets of 4-6 reps and then milk those strength gains with more volume in the 6-10 range.

A few days ago I did 10 sets of 10 on high incline DB press with shorter rest times and that's something I doubt I'd ever do with a barbell because it's too tempting to load more weight on the bar and do 3-4 sets.

    1. A squat rack would be nice but I don't buy junk and all that was available after gyms closed were cheap wobbly uprights that support around 200kg.

    2. I've always prioritized deadlifts over squats even training them twice a week. Skim over my training posts from the last 15 years and this will be obvious.

    3. After taking 4 years off and returning with a knee injury that occurred outside the gym, I made a decision not to do any knee extension exercises that would aggravate it until the knee felt stable again. When I tried a low bar position for GMs I found my shoulder flexibility was garbage and since I've never had a shoulder injury I decided to leave it alone and do RDLs instead. At this stage of my life I have no desire to increase mobility in a complex joint that is already working for me pain free pressing heavy numbers in my favorite exercises so my choice now would be a safety squat bar — I'm not a powerlifter.

    4. Dumbbells are by a mile the best piece of equipment for bodybuilding as far as upper body training goes. Unlike a barbell each side is isolated so imbalances are less likely to occur. I got those Ironmind dumbbells years ago and they're not only well made but long enough to hold 14 x 11lb plates. That's kind of a big deal when you consider how expensive heavy dumbbells are. See prices below. I also like the fact they have 2" handles because one of my short term goals is 18" forearms. Every time I use them I get a grip/forearm workout. I also use a 2" axle bar for deadlifts and rows.

Hope that answers your questions champ.

Not really, you just exemplified my point underscored with my advice that no one piece of equipment is mandatory. A bright mind like manly can sometimes think outside the box.

Is this wife pays for everything narrative some form of mid 40s FA cope? I wouldn't comment on you approaching 50 living with your parents and pretending to be a big shot investor who can't afford anything... if you didn't keep getting triggered by my posts which aren't even directed at you. For someone who can't stop boasting you've never once furnished this thread with evidence of your vast wealth.

Anyway I was having a conversation with Manly — not you. He can make his own decisions on what equipment he needs to buy. Your contribution was to say you stuff your tiny fingers into the hole of a weight plate and press that. While you're at it, how about you jump on a car forum and tell them all that they could save money catching the bus instead.

No, dumbbells are not essential. However they make a lot of sense for a home gym where you can safely press a reasonable amount of weight on your own without a power rack. Not sure what your problem is with that advice.

I've been looking at dumbbells since a long ago poster first introduced me to PowerBlocks almost 12 years ago. Still haven't pulled the trigger.

I noticed my neg was not forthcoming, can put my disaster bag back in the cupboard for now.

I've always been more attracted to adjustable dumbbells (don't have 1000s for a full range rack) but 99% of everything available is garbage with max 20kg weight limits. Considering just splashing a couple hundred on a decent set and a bench and then just never returning to the gym

Get some handles with enough sleeve space to load some decent weight (Rogue DB-15, etc.), the thinnest 5kg plates you can afford, and reliable collars e.g. OSO/OSO CM-1. With an adjustable bench you could get a lot done.

    Spoiler!

    That's what I got. Oly 25's, 10's, and 5's would get me well over 150 lbs./db.

Unfortunately one of my drawbacks is i've got about 160lbs of plates but they're all 1". And 1" dumbbell bars tend to be significantly weaker

Have got a BB which is seeing me through at the moment, but means I can't load up on a single hand. Ah well, will probably have to head back to the gym once they re-open because I haven't got space for a bench/rack

Am fairly lucky that my lifting numbers aren't exactly huge though so can still get a decent thrashing while improvising

    Spoiler!
I like those. Gonna look them up to see if they are in my poverty range. Right now I am using some 1" DB handles and making sketchy looking DBs when I need to. Not the safest but I rarely go over 80 pounds and when I do it is DB rows so I am not under it if it snaps
You would be surprised just how much time I have to waste.

It was the third time they had halted the fight for them to tend to it, and I was absolutely fine other than a little blood. My trainer said two of the three judges had me up, and some in the crowd later said I was robbed, but I don’t know. The dude was tough, and I don’t wanna take anything away from him.

If anyone is interested in a video, let me know. I haven’t uploaded anything to my dormant YouTube in a while.

Also, I sparred this guy several times back before our gym closed:

    https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/76670

He’s a former son-in-law of George Foreman and came up in the Houston area under Foreman’s promotion. He was looking to make a comeback and found our gym (we’ve got a pretty good stable of older dudes that will go some rounds.) For anybody out there who has ever thought they’d go “one round with Tyson for a million dollars,” you’re an idiot. Trained heavyweights can do life-altering damage within one round, easily. This dude hit me so hard once that I thought I was responding to a question from the trainer, but no actual words were coming out of my mouth.
Wow, Lencho practicing the sweet science. I very well remember the hell it did to my body and that was in my early twenties. Couldn't imagine doing it now in my late 40s. Out of curiosity who sanctions your bouts?

USA Boxing. Apparently, it has grown quite a bit over the last few years. Regular tournaments each year in NYC, Vegas, Atlanta, San Jose, Arizona, Florida, etc. None in Texas, which sucks. Closest one for me to drive to is Mena, Arkansas, but it didn’t happen this year due to this focking virus.

Finally bought a bench for my Covid lifting

    Finally used the bench

Rickety piece of sh*t nearly killed me

Should have spent more on bench, seriously considering buying some decent dumbbell handles now

I settled on a couple Rogue echo and monster bands. Apparently one of the bands has resistance equal to 200 lbs. Maybe I can do some one arm benches or rows. Some form of a squat or rdl
