I think my biggest issue with barbells is that I always do low reps. Like 3-5 reps and for whatever reason I get chest strains when I habitually do > 3 x 5. With dumbbells though I can increase ROM and TUT but never get hurt/strains. At this point, I just need to lift again. It has been months

Good point. There's less temptation with dumbbells to target low reps. While low reps are obviously great for targeting maximal strength your joints take a beating and you can burn out after a while and start going backwards, increase the risk of injury, etc. Increasing the volume with dumbbells can lead to more hypertrophy and bigger muscles generally means greater potential for strength gains down the road. That's how I've always approached it. Build strength with sets of 4-6 reps and then milk those strength gains with more volume in the 6-10 range.
A few days ago I did 10 sets of 10 on high incline DB press with shorter rest times and that's something I doubt I'd ever do with a barbell because it's too tempting to load more weight on the bar and do 3-4 sets.

Is this wife pays for everything narrative some form of mid 40s FA cope? I wouldn't comment on you approaching 50 living with your parents and pretending to be a big shot investor who can't afford anything... if you didn't keep getting triggered by my posts which aren't even directed at you. For someone who can't stop boasting you've never once furnished this thread with evidence of your vast wealth.
Anyway I was having a conversation with Manly — not you. He can make his own decisions on what equipment he needs to buy. Your contribution was to say you stuff your tiny fingers into the hole of a weight plate and press that. While you're at it, how about you jump on a car forum and tell them all that they could save money catching the bus instead.
No, dumbbells are not essential. However they make a lot of sense for a home gym where you can safely press a reasonable amount of weight on your own without a power rack. Not sure what your problem is with that advice.

I noticed my neg was not forthcoming, can put my disaster bag back in the cupboard for now.
I've always been more attracted to adjustable dumbbells (don't have 1000s for a full range rack) but 99% of everything available is garbage with max 20kg weight limits. Considering just splashing a couple hundred on a decent set and a bench and then just never returning to the gym

Unfortunately one of my drawbacks is i've got about 160lbs of plates but they're all 1". And 1" dumbbell bars tend to be significantly weaker
Have got a BB which is seeing me through at the moment, but means I can't load up on a single hand. Ah well, will probably have to head back to the gym once they re-open because I haven't got space for a bench/rack
Am fairly lucky that my lifting numbers aren't exactly huge though so can still get a decent thrashing while improvising

USA Boxing. Apparently, it has grown quite a bit over the last few years. Regular tournaments each year in NYC, Vegas, Atlanta, San Jose, Arizona, Florida, etc. None in Texas, which sucks. Closest one for me to drive to is Mena, Arkansas, but it didn’t happen this year due to this focking virus.
