Ironically it was OK while performing the sets, but difficult to breathe when resting in between sets.

Nice - Glad you are able to get back to it! Not sure I'd like wearing a mask in the gym, but do what you got to do. I just have to wear one walking in, then we can remove them.. But then put it back on if you need to use the bathroom lol.

Yeah this is the hardest part of lifting during this period.

You have to wear a mask at all time, I wasn't going to wear just any mask so I bought a working out mask.

Honestly I thought I was going to have trouble breathing during a set, My plan was to pull the mask down while doing a set and put it on during my breaks in between. Turns out I did its the other way around. Ironically wearing the mask while performing the set helped my breathing. I guess the mask is made to so that?

The real test is how you feel tomorrow. My experience of stop/start, is horror at how much DOMS you can get from so little in the first couple of workouts. Fortunately that wears off pretty quick though

Unfortunately, likely months. Seeing my orthopedic surgeon next Tuesday and hope to get a timeline. First will be physio, but at least that's something.

Nice! I'd freakin' kill for that pain! I'm like you in that I need to lift... I had a nice constant run going for the last 7 years and was deep in the groove. Do me a favor and squeeze out a couple reps for me.

What happened? Usually something you can do to at least feel normal. I’ve been doing upper only the last month or so after visiting snap city on a warm up set of DLs, felt something pop in my lower back and it tightened up real quick. I could barely strip the plates off the bar and put them away Lol. Its feeling pretty good now, might try some light squats tomorrow after cardio, but still a little gun shy. I couldn’t put socks on for a couple weeks. Probably going to hold off on deads for awhile longer, maybe start with RDLs. Before the gym shutdown I had been dealing with shoulder issues for over a year, but the rest helped and they feel pretty good now. The older I get it seems like I’m always working around something. I’ve throttled back a little though and have been working slightly higher rep schemes and being more cognizant of perfect form.

Once you start the "always working around something" it doesn't seem to stop. When I realized that, and it took a while, I was much more at ease with doing what I could do vs what I want to do. Just happy to be still lifting...

Don't want to hijack John's positive thread, so I'll keep it brief. I got hit by a car while riding my bike Aug 14th. One of those freak things - wrong place at the wrong time on a route I've done daily for months. Bottom line; shattered my left clavicle requiring reconstruction surgery. Damage to rotator TBD. Could have easily been much worse. Saw the car at the last second and instinctively grabbed the brakes. Being a strong MF, my front brake seized on the rim and I launched over the bars and shoulder first into the car's front fender! Could have easily been head first. On the plus side, my bike was fine and never touched the car! As I said above, I hope to get good news from my surgeon next week and will go from there.

Sucks to hear about your lower back, but sounds like you're on the mend since giving DL's a break. I know you to be a smart, cerebral dude so I have no doubt you'll be lifting for many, many years to come owing to good sense, technique and attitude.

Oh jeez, ya I guess not much you can do to work around that. You’ll be back. My 8 yo daughter and I were out for a ride on Monday afternoon coming down the street as some kid went bombing across the intersection hit the curb and went endo. We were probably 40 meters away but it looked like he hit his head on the sidewalk. He didn’t move at all until we got to him. No helmet on, was expecting a to make a 911 call for gushing head wound but luckily he landed on his shoulder. He was banged up, scraped up, and clothes were ripped. Little fuker didn’t even cry I checked him out and he seemed okay but a little shook up, but went on his way. My daughter thought she recognized him so we checked the school yearbook when we got home. He was in my son’s class so 7yo riding around by himself, no helmet, like 5 blocks from his house. I just started letting my kids start going around our block together w/out us but they have to check in every lap lol.

Anyway, I hope you heal up quick. Sounds brutal, but it obviously could have been much worse.

Nice! I'd freakin' kill for that pain! I'm like you in that I need to lift... I had a nice constant run going for the last 7 years and was deep in the groove. Do me a favor and squeeze out a couple reps for me.
Hitting the gym today again, mad pain everywhere today, but will push that extra rep and call it a Chaz rep!

I never really saw it as a legs as I add legs to push, so it's always push and pull. But yup I am like a kid on Christmas can't wait till 7!

Being a product of growing up in the 70's, when I got back into biking ~5 years ago (odometer indicates over 1200 miles in 2020) I didn't wear a helmet. Fortunately for me, a friend at work (who is MY age) shamed me into it. I think it was pride keeping me from wearing one, but I always wear one now.

John, those doms are miserable when you haven't exercised in a while. My wife has struggled with her weight forever (but she has kept it under control for the last few years), and she complained once that she just didn't want to spend 45 minutes in the gym 3-4 times per week, so I told her about Tabata workouts (hiit) so she tries ONE workout of goblet squats: 10 squats, rest ~40 seconds, and repeat for 10 minutes. She was SO SORE(!!!) that she had trouble getting on the toilet and even had to call in work sick since she's an RN and must walk from patient room to room and semi-frequently physically have to push/pull patients around.

Nice gym, Johnny. Really good to see you and others back at it.

I'm doing full body 3X per week, MWF. I change up each workout day. 2 exercises per bodypart per workout at 3 sets each.

I know full body sounds amateurs, but I do not do circuit training at all. It is free weights, 45 seconds to 1 minute rest between sets.

This workout is much different than pre-COVID at 4 days per week and working each bodypart 1X per week. Now, all bodyparts 3X per week.

But, now at 182lbs, I look better.

    (I hope you're sore AF)

Good for you man, right now I am just hitting the top 5 (in my book) Squats, Deadlifts, BOR, OHP and bench to get me "going" and yes my whole body feels like it was hit by a truck!

I don't really like the gym, its too packed and you have to wait for equipment. My gym never got packed and I also knew where everything was, I am a little lost in this gym.

I like your workout. For the first time in my life I am depending more on compound movements, too.

I workout at 4AM, so not so packed.

I know it's tough at a new gym finding your way around, but at least you are there.

Isn't it amazing how the body works. We do this chit for decades upon decades, piling on the weights and mass, then we take a short break and it hurts like we never ever started at age 15.
It really makes me laugh and shake my head at times.

i tried it a few times and my body was not strong, coordinated(dropping things) or highly motivated. It really depends on if you are a morning person or not.
