7 inches....GOOD LORD. Almost as big as my schlong.Nintendo has had massive success with its Switch console, and in 2019 augmented that success with the Switch Lite. Now it appears the Japanese gaming giant is going big, readying a updated version of the console with a bigger display, reports Bloomberg.
The new Switch, which unnamed sources said would likely launch for the holiday 2021 period, will reportedly have a 7-inch OLED display made by Samsung. That would make it bigger than the 6.2-inch display on the standard Switch, and much bigger than the 5.5-inch Switch Lite.

Apparently still a 720p screen. Which isn't horrible I guess, I just was hoping for 1080p. I guess to keep perspective, 720p on a 7in screen is wayyy more pixels per inch than 4k on a 55 in screen. Even a good amount more than 4k on a 65in screen.
And OLED. That's good. Blacks often look greyish on the current Switch.
Hope the rest is a decent spec jump. I'll be happy to play previously 720p docked games at 1080p (looking at you Xenoblade and Bayonetta 2).
And I bet games like Bayonetta 3, BOTW2, and MP4 will benefit from whatever increased specs this thing has.Last edited by ScramFranklin; 03-03-2021 at 06:52 PM.

that's very possible and makes complete sense
except nothing that runs in 720p is beast mode ever. What are you going to dlss up from? 480p????
If they're doing this its to save actual power and improve battery life to hit previous performance specs, not to improve on what was there which is hilarious because it's the equivalent of phones from 2015.

720p?
For fuks sake nintendo
We’re already at 4 times that resolution-Some people say good things come to those who wait, truth is, good things come to those who work..... who work later.....who work harder...... who are willing to go further than anyone else to get them. If you're waiting for good things to come to you, you'll be waiting for a pretty long time.

phones can't compete with the switch, they got some nice chips, but phones instant thermal throttle and trying to run games on a 6" screen at 1440p/4k for no damn reason.. also phone's OS is doing other things.
i think you have to go back and take a page out of apple's book. Apple is still using what you consider "low res" displays. When the iphone 8 was only 1334x750 and today's iphone 12 2532x1170 .. all were great screens despite it not being 1440p/4k.. its not the resolution its the quality of the display. Samsung S21 (2021 phone) with 1080p beautiful screen.
a great example is 4k televisions.. there are many 4k tv's out there.. however unless its oled I wouldn't purchase a 4k TV because my 1080p plasma kicks all the 4k tv's asses in image quality.Last edited by rocketfish; 03-04-2021 at 12:07 PM.

And? Nintendo hasn't been about specs for years. The current Switch plays Switch games pretty smooth. Even if Nintendo wrapped up a PS5 in plastic box with a Joy Con attached to it you wouldn't be seeing COD on it anytime soon. That isn't their market and spec'ing out a machine for games their userbase doesn't play is dumb.

this. Not to mention the majority of semidemanding games on phones aren't hitting the phones max resolutions. Iphone X runs fortnite at less than 720p. Hardly any 3d games take advantage of phones high resolution screens.
Yes, the screen being larger will eat more battery. Just not as much as 2.25x the resolution. It being OLED may help a little, since blacks will actually be black.Last edited by ScramFranklin; 03-04-2021 at 12:14 PM.

but also since you are gaining real-estate on the screen, you gain real-estate on the body so you have room for a bigger battery. It will likely be the same 3-4 hour playtime portable.
the biggest thing they can do 720p portable (which is fine) and make it 4k docked using nvidia's dlss. Perhaps the dock will contain the extra power needed, who knows.*** Free Thinker Crew ***

Yea I'm expecting many games to hit 1080p or 1440p native docked. Then DLSS to hit higher resolutions. I don't think the dock will have an egpu since it would need USB 4 to be viable.
As much as I would love a 1080p screen, 720p just makes more sense for handheld. I play docked 99% of the time anyways.
And I forgot to mention cooling. That would be a larger problem with a 1080p screen as well, not just battery.Last edited by ScramFranklin; 03-04-2021 at 01:23 PM.

fuark at this point I may hold off on playing switch games in anticipation of playing them on a switch with better specs: No more heroes 3, Age of Calamity, Bayonetta 3 (whenever it stops hiding), Bowsers Fury.
I think it's accurate. Reliable insiders have corroborated on this now.
For phone screens yes, but phone games do not typically run at that high of a resolution. Anyways, keeping the screen 720p... aside from the battery and cooling benefits.... it will allow for better graphical setting and frame rates. Hell, Mario Kart 8 ran native 720p/60 on Switch handheld. A more powerful Switch with the same screen resolution could potentially run a sequel with ray tracing (that is a hypothetical, not something I necessarily think will happen).Last edited by ScramFranklin; 03-04-2021 at 04:23 PM.
