Not necessarily you can still lift for power, it might help to change to endurance, but you will get your cardio and endurance from rolling.

If you go sparring in MMA style every week, don't you get a lot of black eyes or bruises on your head? What do other people think, eg. does anyone have an office job and people wonder why you are like this all the time?

Or does it just not happen? Like people don't generally punch you in the nose?

I just remember from school if someone got punched in the face, everyone knew it for the next 3 days.

Hey guys, I'm wanting to join a Martials Art when school resumes. How's this one look ? (http://www.universalmma.com/)
Currently deciding between BJJ and Muay Thai. I like Muay Thai more but what one is more beneficial ? I want one that gives me a better workout.
It'll be my first time so kind of nervous going myself. Any more pointers ? Thanks !

A gym is a gym, the most important thing is getting the work in, but it looks good. Are you looking to compete or get a good workout? I think Muay Thai gets you a better workout, but BJJ is still great. And don't be nervous, everyone at gyms are generally very nice and willing to help you out

That school looks pretty good. There is a member here 'MUFC' that is up in Canada I believe. PM him and he may be able to give you some more info on the school than I can.
And when you say beneficial....for what? Work out, self defense?

Strongly disagree with the "a gym is a gym" line. There are some crap hole McDojos out there fronting like they're a GOOD gym. I don't know about you, but even though you're "getting the work in" and sweating at a McDojo doesn't mean you're learning good techniques or getting quality instruction. IMO, if you're looking for a hobby or something to compete in I want my time and money going some place that I'm going to get the best instruction.

Another important point is to not be afraid to spar with the really good guys. Most people want to spar with people weaker than them so they can win easily, but that's not how you get better.

Went to my first Muay Thai class. One of my problems is I cannot jump rope. It's all downhill from there. I took what can only be described as a cardio butt kicking and threw so many kicks that I no longer want to walk. Had a blast though and I'm popping some motrin before my next class!

Start slow with the rope. I couldn't skip for anything when I started. I would run on the treadmill to get warmed up while everyone else skipped, and then hop into the class. On free mat time I'd skip starting slowly until I got better

Thanks for the input man! I'm pretty uncoordinated, I bought a rope and have been practicing at home. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll have it down.

Not sure if srs. You are supposed to learn how to do that at the class. Nobody is going to expect you to be hardcore on your first day.

Honestly it is better that you don't know anything provided you don't pretend you know.

They'll get used to it. During normal training, your partner is not trying to break your face so this isn't really a big deal. Wear a collared shirt to hide the choke rash from your gi (if used).

you need to work on cardio for BJJ. If you gas out early, strength means nothing in grappling.

    be humble

Best Advice I could tell someone would be to be extremely humble. BJJ is all about respect and you are just a spec on the mat. Act like it and learn all you can so you can grow.

Good choice. One of the unspoken benefits you will receive is that you will become a member of Team Lloyd Irvin, and that will open up a wealth of other training opportunities to you as well down the road.

Oh, if anyone else is considering training in MD. I would recommend Evolve Academy. It changed my life, and I know that it could do the same for you. You can find a review at: Review of Evolve Academy in Gaithersburg, Maryland

Also I frequently visit Crazy 88 in Elkridge, and the instruction there is topnotch.
