Do you guys think this virus is easily transmitted through produce?
Reason being, I went to Costco today and got their giant plastic bag of spinach, and after getting home realized the entire back of the bag has tiny holes in it for ventilation. I washed the spinach and then blended it in my vitamix before drinking. Would liquefying the spinach kill it the virus?
I picked spinach that was towards the back of the stockpile so I doubt it was coughed on. Only worry is if it rubbed against anything like other grocery items, the cart, checkout lane conveyor belt, etc before coming home.

I mean, unless somebody who is contagious (with this or some other things) sneezed on it or wiped their nose honey on it, taking it out of the bag and washing it it down under running water seems reasonable, same as usual.
I doubt the blender does/changes anything no matter what.
I'm paranoid though so I'm not currently buying fresh produce that people can freely handle unless it has a good rind I can disinfect before cutting it open (like say watermelon, or bananas). Our grocery stores have spinach in hard plastic containers that are taped shut...so that's what we'd get right now.
Your call.

Damn. I'm paranoid now. Is there any article that says how long viruses last on food, in the fridge?
I think what I will do is put the spinach in my toaster oven for 3 minutes @ 150F before blending it. That's hardly hot enough to cook it, but it is what's recommended to get rid of virus particles.

This seems to be a bit of an uncertainty. There is a study floating around that says like 24 hours on cardboard, 2 days some other things, 3 days on plastic and stainless steel I think it was...but also that temperature and other factors matter...then there's the sars-cov-2 RNA round on surfaces in the cruise ship 17 days later, but doesn't say if that means it was able to infect or not...coronaviruses generally are known to be relatively hardier 'out in the world'...the whole fomite thing is still kind of an uncertainty (Birx said something to that effect just yesterday [Mon])

Some can last far longer, but yes most viruses are prob within that range.
Interesting enough, environmental longevity is a good predictor for how virulent directly transmitted viruses will evolve. Those that can persist in the environment longer are less dependent on host health, so the cost of within host virulence factors is reduced.

Study finding Hydroxychloroquine not improving likelihood to survive COVID19.
https://www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/a...-care-in-study
This is why I’m cautious about all the headlines with Hydroxychloroquine being “effective” on the basis that it “saved thousands”, when you’re talking about a disease where 98% of people ARE supposed to survive.
The study above though did not take into account if it reduces the severity of the illness. Would love to see a multi-prong study comparing viral shedding duration and also hospital stay duration comparing Hydroxychloroquine, remdesivir, and Avigan. They said she's gone too far this time
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

20% of hospitalizions are filled with 18-49 year olds.
50% of infected are 18-49
80% infected in LA are 18-65
What the CDC did report was that 20% of those hospitalized were ages 20-44, and 18% were 45-54. If we add up those two age groups, we get a total of 38%.Last edited by metroins; 03-25-2020 at 05:46 AM.
