Good question, don't do a search first. There's not that much info in here about glutamine.

I use it everyday, about 20 to 40g a day. I get better results on glutamine than on 8 scoops of whey a day. 70% or something like that of the protein in muscle is glutamine.

That’s just me, a lot of people will tell you a lot of different stuff, but I have compared using glutamine, v/s cake batter shakes, and all I take is glutamine for extra protein besides protein found in food.

Not only that, it's basically the most nonessential one there is. If your body needs it it makes it. Throwing glutamine in your diet = throwing ultra-expensive calories in your diet. Might as well just take glucose.

That’s protein from glutamine instead of protein powder knucklehead.

Have you tried using glutamine v/s protein Scotty or Dave?

Have you tracked your gains using either one and compared the two?

you 2 seem to be pretty smart, why don't you 2 post what gains you have made in the gym for the last 4 years and what you have used supplements and diet. I want you guy's knowledge and physique, and I am sure everyone would find that more useful than tons of post each day, telling others that what the think or know is stupid, and nothing works.

Take glucose instead of glutamine, pure genus. You have a plethora (sh** load) of knowledge.

So, should I take in 1-1.5g of glutamine/day per lb of bodyweight? I guess I'll forego the protein and eat fat, carbs, and glutamine(the NEW macronutrient)

I buy a 1kilo container for about 40 to 45 bucks and use it in about 4 or 5 weeks, it’s expensive but I cannot stand milk shakes. I grow the same on 20g or more grams/day as I did non 5-8 scoops of optimum whey, or 3 or 4 scoops of isopure.

When I was drinking protein it kept me from getting hungry because it’s more calories than the glutamine, so that’s an advantage to drink protein powder if you do not eat enough to support your size. I eat sandwiches all day to try to get more calories

Don't go too much by protein requirements IAW bodyweight; the requirements should be more specific to lean muscle mass, and lifestyle.

A good rule for me is:

I calculated 20% of the weight of protein powder I would take, and used glutamine instead. So since I was use to drinking 150g/day of protein powder, I use about 30g day of glutamine instead.

I don't care about the cost, it does not send me running to the toilet after 3 hours of taking it, and it has no taste per se, so you can mix it with anything. When getting ready for a show, I would have to stop protein a week out anyway to stop the bloating and use only glutamine. When I was deployed last year, all I took was glutamine because protein was too much weight and I was only allowed one personal bag. I got bigger on more food, with glutamine than more protein powder and less food, and I am still over 200lbs with less than 6% bodyfat at 5’7”. I never broke 190lbs until I was deployed and ate more, and used more glutamine. So use what works for you, but I am using glutamine.

Mc1 how much were you taking?

Were you taking no more than 5g at a time spread out all day, especially 5g as soon as you get up and 5 g post workout and before bed?

Those are the best times to take glutamine; I mix some and drink it during the workout also.

Those are the best times to take glutamine; I mix some and drink it during the workout also.
i have taken glutamine 5grams at a time throughtout the day as you describe at 20-30 grams per day. no perceptable difference.

BTW, you grow better off 20 grams of glutamine than 8 scoops of optimum whey???? that's interesting because my container of optimum whey states 2463mg per scoop, or roughly 2.5 grams.
I will do the math for you...

    8x2.5=20

I guess all those extra aminos in the optimum powder were just screwing up the absorbtion of the most important amino, your prefered glutamine.

I do not understand where the confussion is, there is about 24g of protein in 1 scoop (28.4g) of optimum whey. I said nothing about glutamine in optimum whey. 8 scoops of optimum whey is 2.5g of glutamic acid per scoop, thats 1.25mg of glutamine.

Milk protein's glutamic acid content is 50% L-glutamine, and egg protein is 70% glutamine of glutamic acid. So mc1 before becomming a smart ass and looking stupid like several message board posters, slow down, and educate yourself.

You can take all the protein you want but if it bloats you and make you take huge dumps, you are probably not absorbing over 30% of the protein.

    Summary:

Glutamic acid is 50% L-glutamine from milk sources,

    70% from egg.

looks like optimum added about 2.5g of glutamine to each scoop, but there total glutamine is not 2.5g its actually 3.75g so PM and ask them why pure glutamine works better for me, since is so important to you.

Could it be an assimilation issue of glutamine v/s whey concentrate- known to shoot threw you fast as hell, probably so.

"please, please explain how this works, please... 40g glutamine instead of approx 160g of whey protein? let me know, because I’ve taken glut myself, up to about 35g daily (by the way, didn’t do ****)"

I have not tried them, but I would put money on it that steroids with a sorry a** training program, a sorry diet, and 3 hours of sleep every night will not do sh** either. Are you saying steroids don't work?

I am not trying to become the glutamine spokes person here, but if you are doing everything else right- diet, rest, antioxidants, training, and you have reached you max. natural lean body mass, glutamine helps. Now if all the previously mentioned items are not in order, quit wasting time on this board go to the gym, clean up your diet, and get some rest.

Man I'm sorry I've totally gone out of my way to try to treat you with respect but I'm sick of your bull****, you constantly flame me. And all I do is point out things that anyone who is educated should know, and in a respectful manner save for our first interaction. Glutamine does not have an advantage over any other readily useable calorie. Restores muscle glycogen? Doesn't DEXTROSE do that?

And why don't you stay the fück away from the constant ad homs, I don't care how big you are. Big does not equal intelligent. Anyone can get big over time with relatively simple diet and training strategies, taking 50 g of glutamine isn't the reason. Sure I'm 150 lbs. does that make you happy? Why don't you grow a brain? I think what's really sad is I've been seriously lifting for less than a year and I already know way more than you.

And the protein you get when you take glutamine is INCOMPLETE. Do you know what that means? You think wheat protein is low quality? Well instead of half of the amino acids now you're getting ONE. And it's nonessential, no less. As you say it's abundant, and that's because your body can transfer basically anything you take in to glutamine.
