The gain of function research seems like a semantic argument and the lab leak hypothesis did not seem likely at all he was saying it did not happen. Saagar points out he had an email in his inbox question the lab leak at the time he was saying it was definitely no but from my understanding most of the information was saying it seemed really unlikely at the time. Maybe he shouldn've said it seemed unlikely instead of a definite no?
To my knowledge he still steadfastly holds the position that a lab leak is most improbable, and pushes the now largely laughable zoonotic hypothesis.
As to GoF, there is no doubt at all that he knew exactly what was being asked and why, and he was groping for a way out. I'm not saying that it is impossible to find a finely grained definition that means something else, but come on, this is an "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" moment. He funded research that could very well result in a covid-like outbreak from a lab leak. I am not saying that his funded project DID do that, just that he is utterly unwilling to permit such a narrative to exist, and is clinging to evasive wordsmithing as a way out.
And just to throw a bone to him, I do not endorse the Monday morning quarterbacking on GoF research and gotcha politics being played here. Even as someone with libertarian sympathies who wants to like the Pauls, Rand is being a theatrical ass and does not convince me of his goodwill in his line of questioning. We should want to know the true origin story as way to prevent another problem, not to point fingers and take out our collective rage on someone like Fauci. GoF research is something that has divided scientists and administrations. I can see both sides. If you asked me 5 years ago I could certainly have been persuaded of its merits. So in a sense, I can see why Fauci wants to stay far and clear of admitting any involvement in research that theoretically could result in something like COVID when there is no data to suggest that his particular project actually did. Nevertheless, he signed up for this job and needs to swallow that indirect link and have an honest discussion about it.
He lied about funding gain of function research, and relatedly, has been recalcitrant about the likelihood of covid being a lab leak. And it's not always what you say, it's what you don't say. He should not need to be asked certain things in order to come out and clarify certain narratives that need clarification, and to me it seems he has held back from doing that if the narrative drives the end results he wants.
You mean the Eco Health Alliance funding and whether or not the SARS research was GOF research? Semantics is tricky. It's also unclear to me whether or not the EHA informed the CDC of what the actual experiments were before they funded them.
I find it interesting that we wouldn't have known to try Remdesivir and other medications if not for that type of research and I don't think, despite the plethora of sci fi movies, that it's likely the original strain in Wuhan was from a lab leak. It's possible, just unlikely. Labs do a few controlled experiments with directed genetic changes or transfers. Mother nature does trillions of experiments on a daily basis. We've had a dozen known strains occur in 2 years and there are likely hundreds more that we'll never know about. Maybe thousands. The fact that some of the research the Wuhan lab does is related to a type of viruses endemic to their area makes sense. They're trying to do useful research. Still, even though I doubt they can take any blame for the current pandemic, it does make for a great conspiracy theory!
I watched it and don't disagree with their sentiments.
All along I've felt there's been too much politics involved in the information dissemination and guidances. That said, other than saying people shouldn't be wearing masks way back at the beginning when there was a shortage of N95 masks, I don't think Fauci ever gave really bad advice and I don't think he's lied. I also don't think he had to be pressured to admit anything in the clips they showed. He just had to be asked. He's pretty honest and admits it when he's made a mistake. Whether it's appropriate for him to say he thinks others are making a mistake in some cases is debatable.
Agree that there has been too much politicking around this whole thing. That being said, Fauci himself is guilty of it.
So, we have been using hospitalization and death number that only account for WITH Covid as opposed to FROM Covid. And, now, he is starting to point that out about kids hospitalization numbers being high. The Governor of NY is now looking to change the way their numbers are seen also and only report hospitalization from Covid.
So, we've fear mongered the general population with numbers that aren't accurate. The media is just as culpable as they continually claim 800k deaths FROM Covid.
I guess I'm most tired of the way the media & Fauci have used the data to manipulate us. And, the hospitals have manipulated the system for financial gain.

Tested positive via an at home antigen test this morning. Took a trip to Vegas this last weekend (Thu - Sun). Woke up Friday morning with a chitty nose, which is normal for me being around all of the cigarette smoke. Saturday the same with a bit of a mucusy cough. Came home Sunday with same symptoms, runny nose slight cough. Took the at home test and positive showed up this morning. Ran and got swabbed for a PCR to confirm.
So far, symptoms are exactly cold like.
2nd Moderna dose 3/30/21, no booster.

Too funny. One of the other docs in my wife's practice went to Vegas last week and she has COVID now too. So does the other person who went with her.
Of course what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, has never applied to viruses and such.
Hope you feel better quickly.

All the best Jay, hope it's a quick recovery brother

Thanks for the well wishes. Honestly, this currently doesn't feel like anything other than a common cold that I've endured countless times.
Also, tried to get the monoclonal antibody treatment and no can do currently. Hospitals are only giving them to "at risk" patients. There's an Allergy doctor that was administering them and when I called they told me they were completely out and their allocation has been cut by 90%. Said they normally get 100 treatments per week and are now only receiving 10. I would imagine with the increased case loads, the powers that be are trying to keep them available for the at risk group. Not sure how they are allocating that though.

How you feeling today Jay?
Was really winded lifting this morning which is never a problem for me. No other symptoms but thinking about burning a at home test.

Two coworkers got the rona. One of them for the second, maybe third time. Chitty symptoms but 70% of the first tome she got corona and no never apparently.
Going around and spreading like wildfire amongst workers where I’m at.
Oh, they say “vaccine is for pu**ies and more people are dying from the vaccine anyways”. So no vaccine for them.

The spread here in my part of NY is crazy. My bjj gym has over 30 people out right now w/ c19 confirmed and who knows how many are not confirmed. Somehow, even though I've been in very close contact with many of them, I've avoided it. My sister in law has it now and is pretty sick (think a bad flu). My coach text me this AM asking if I could cover the kids class tomorrow as he hes going to get tested. We all gettin this thing...

Pretty bad at the NY/NJ Ports as well. Lots of workers are out . I couldn’t escape it either. Just finished my isolation yesterday.
Glad I got tested though. Wouldn’t have known I had it if I didn’t get tested because I didn’t have any symptoms .

No doubt we are all going to get it.

My buddy just called me. Got boosted on 12/21. Tested positive 12/27. Mild cold, gave it to his octogenarian parents. They have stuffy noses and a cough.
Everyone should catch it, we'll all get antibodies and it will be like the chicken pox. one and done.

Sounds like a great plan but folks are getting it twice and even rumors of 3 times..
I don't think we will get rid of it until we get the poorer countries vaccinated. These areas are perfect for creating new variants
Glad to hear you had it easy Quicksand. You were fully vaxxed right?

I think the hypothesis with those getting it 2x or 3x is that they are getting a different variant each time.
Feel a little better today. Nose is less runny and not as stuffy as well today. Throat mucus is still there causing me to clear my throat often. However, haven't really been coughing today.
Took some NyQuil nighttime stuff last night and slept hard all night.

It’s never been a serious threat to most. This will get to most people well before the new Pfizer omicron special is available in March, but it’s nothing more than a cold. Strangely, for the original my daughters symptoms and my own were worse. This one was worse for my wife, she had a cold with cough for four days but was less sever than a typical cold. OG Covid was mild but long lasting fatigue for me, where my daughter had a sore throat and rash and my wife had a headache and fever. My son just doesn’t get it, other than being cranky for a day.

I agree. I have been hearing from credible sources that by March we may see some herd immunity and a serious drop in cases.
If that is true and if that happens, I wonder if boosters will be necessary. Opinion?

The vaccines are not and have never been necessary for most, since it’s never been a significant risk for most, since day one (risk being probability of a severe outcome). I’d guess that vaccines will still be strongly recommended twice per year at a minimum (forever). I also think that some people are starting to realize this is a farce and nothing other than a way to enrich politicians and give government power it was never intended to have. The Supreme Court should be deciding on the OSHA ETS soon, that will also play a part on the future of what we are “encouraged” / required to do. I really wish the hypocrisy could be realized. Sadly people are incredibly gullible.

Woot just tested positive. Just about everyone in my universe has it and I've been dealing with a really bad runny nose for a few days so popped open one of the school tests kits and its a strong positive. Feel pretty OK otherwise just a bit run down but I had 13 rolling rounds on Monday (5 min each) and lifted last night so that's never easy.
J&J vaxxed and had the Moderna booster. Guess I'll see if I get worse but I think these cold like symptoms have been going on since the weekend.

I'm honestly surprised NY is still allowing BJJ gyms to be open considering the nature of it.
Do you now have to inform all the people you were rolling with that you tested positive and then quarantine yourself? How does that work for your job?
I know with my job we have to quarantine for 5 days starting from the date you first felt sick, not the day you tested positive. Covid hase been rampant in my department over the last couple weeks.

At this point our part of NY has thrown its hands up. Masks are like 50/50 depending on where you go. BJJ was shut down when the gyms were shut down last year and only opened with training dummies - no person to person rolling. Now it is basically normal life. No one will be shutting down again in upstate NY.
I will let my coach know but contact tracing isn't really a thing now. So many have gotten c19 in my gym that I knew my time was limited. No one that I've rolled with who came down with it contacted me so fuk em :D
I'm a stay at home dad by choice right now so I told the boss (my wife) and she shrugged :D She had the same issue last week and never tested for it because it was just a bad runny nose and a slight sore throat. I'm pretty sure thats the mentality many here have now - just going on with life. If I have to take my kids to get tested or if they come down with my same symptoms I'll have to jump through the C19 NYS protocol hoops which are annoying. Our school district has opted not to do the test to stay stuff for school and my kids aren't vaxxed so they will have the full quarantine time.
