Mice? What percentage of drugs have FDA approval without human trials? I was under the impression it was 0%, but perhaps you being more knowledgeable can shed some light for us.

What about the question I asked you in response to your previous post?
It's a good question. 60 minutes didn't answer that. You should probably write them.
I think the better question is how many drug trials didn't make it to human trials because they used the majority of male mice?

It is a good question because it makes your statement completely irrelevant if the number is 0, which I believe it is.

You really don't know why everyone thinks you are a douchebag do you?
Yes, I am a physician. Did they do a lumbar puncture and an EMG? Did he have plasmapheresis or receive immune globulins? Guillain-Barre doesn't resolve 100% in 30 hours. If you tell me he was worked up at an academic medical center where they found elevated protein in his CSF, did nerve conduction studies that were consistent with it, and ruled out toxins and other more likely etiologies, then I'll consider it to be unlikely, but not impossible. If they were certain it was GB and it resolved in 30 hours, it would be a write up in a medical journal. It's so far out of the normal course that I'd doubt it if one of my old neurology attendings put it down as the diagnosis. I'd also understand why it's a reasonable diagnosis to put down.
Guillain-Barre is a nice easy to remember name for acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy. GB tells you nothing, but the descriptive name tells you what it actually does. Do you think myelin recovers in 30 hours? Most studies have shown it takes weeks, and that would be without an ongoing autoimmune reaction.
I suspect they didn't know the etiology and needed a diagnosis in order to get your dad's care covered. After recovery, there's no real concern about someone who has had GB getting something worse later in life. It's a safe diagnosis for him. No future stigma, bills get covered, paperwork gets done. Perfect for when you have to put something down for reimbursement.
I'm not trying to be mean or belittle your story. Whatever your dad had, it sounds serious, very scary, and I'm glad he's OK, but based on your description, it was more likely a case of "we couldn't find anything else, so let's call it GB", than a true case of autoimmune mediated peripheral demyelination. The people getting GB due to COVID or a vaccine won't be recovering in 30 hours. They'll be miserable for a while, miss a lot of work, possibly have long term sequalae, and it's important to consider that when we discuss the risks from a vaccine or the risks from SARS CoV2.
It doesn't seem like you were trying to be mean. More like trying to be an ass.

eomrat, yes this is an obnoxious post and fully expect you to tell me to ****off and mind my own business, but you are being really tense in a bunch of posts for a few weeks. If you've got work/family stress you have our sympathy but take it easy. Long term stress isn't good for lifting

So Israel is saying just 64% against Delta which is a bit disturbing......

Sorry Ben, but this is the same old half facts scare mongering again, what protection do you hope to get from vaccination... they aren't hugely effective at preventing people from becoming positive. But they are very effective when measured against, for example the risk of hospitalisation or death from the virus.
There are three kinds of lies; lies, damn lies and statistics. (Benjamin Disraeli, and later Mark Twain)
Edit: some general corrections above due to rushed gibberish on original posting

The virus is gonna find a way. If vaccinated people are not getting seriously ill, it’s really not a big deal. I know there are still some deaths / serious illness among vaccinated people but overall seems lower. I saw a thread in R&P about a CDC confirmed case of monkeypox passing through Atlanta Georgia recently, that’s fun. Yay globalization.

I hope to stay out of the hospital, not struggle to breathe like all the people that i have known who had it, and not get a blood O2 level of 32 like my buddy had in Poland.
Is that too much to ask for from Pfizer?
:)

I was watching a show the other night about historical mass extinctions (very uplifting :p ) but this was primarily about volcanoes. I can’t remember where the one was, it wasn’t Yellowstone, this one was in the ocean and basically comes into existence and blows itself apart every 200k years. It was identified through chemistry as having been responsible for several mass extinction events, like hundreds of years of ice age, and is way overdue for another major eruption. Nothing you can do when the air, water, and climate are all fuked. Although masks might help for a bit to keep the glass / ash out of your lungs so you can make it to the starve to death part.

IIRC Flesh eating bacteria is usually a strain of streptococcus pyogenese or something like that, basically very closely related to the bacteria that can cause strep throat.

Yup Tater got it done
He wasn't a willing participant in the vaccine thing, he talked a good battle but when it came down to it his missus rules the roost and when she said you are getting it, Old Tater had to roll up his sleeve and take one for the team and is now a member of the vaxxed community.
Some of us found it funny but I wouldn't mention it around Tater, it's still a sore spot with him.

In on mass extinction talk, volcanos definitely did some damage but the asteroid that ended the dinosaurs was probably the highest ratio of killing birds to one stone in Earth's history.

I'll tell u something. It's gunna take a asteroid to wipe out all these fuking Canada Geese birds!!! And I'm willing to accept reasonable qty human collateral damage if it means wiping these ridiculous flying dumpsters from the earth ball's atmos fear.
and good to see you back. I hope your brief absence was positive in nature. :)
We have Canada geese over here. Several breeding pairs were brought to London and homed on the lake in St James Park in the very late 1600s. They spread out from there but were fairly minor birds until WW2 when they started to really spread across the country (following orders from Hitler?). Evil birds that profit from war.
They're supposed to be in Canada not in UK.
When are you coming to take them back?

I am under less stress than I have been since I was 17 years old. Because I literally live 90% of the life that I envisioned for myself since I was about 15.
I am just apt to call out peoples bad behavior.
I have been coming to this site since 2007. I have no idea if MarkIT or MTpockets are married. Nor Chaz, PlateauPower, Iron Charles, Ben, ArchAngle or many others with years on this board.
Because those guys do not complain about their wives on the internet, if they posses a wife, that is. I bet they do not complain about their wives at work or the gym or the racetrack or hunting lodge, or anywhere else. I would also be willing to bet that you would not complain about your wife at work, or a tea party or fox hunt or war with France, or cricket match or whatever it is that you people do for fun over there.
Be more like your handsome American friends.

That's some funny azz thit there, this guy is a riot.
Mr. Plower is married, Ben has a girlfriend whose brothers pick on her and he sits there biting his lip, Arch is definitely not married.
My wife has 5 sisters, when all us BIL's get to together we talk about all the dumb thit are wives do. One of 'em is a Air Borne Ranger, Paratrooper. in the 70's. One guy I worked with for 20 years talked about his wife all the time, and she does the same to him.
The only mofo I've ever heard tell me wife jokes are not funny was our Pastor:D and you.
Eomrat, the album 'Freak Out", half that album was about Frank Zappa's 1st wife, here are some lines-
"I sit and laugh at fools in love, there ain't no such thing as love, no angels singing up above today"
"Why should I be stuck with u, it just not what I want to to do, I ain't got no heart to give away"

haha! You and LWW would sell in all the big markets. How to package... that's the dilemma.... rest assured... I'll keep thinking on it. :)
But EOM Dude, do I have permission to mess with you without fear that I wake up one rainy morning with my throat sliced? I know it sounds silly but I need that reassurance based on the mental image I've conjured of you'z. I sometimes feel like u could like, see into my soul or some chit and that kinda rattles me. As to why, well I aint gonna get into that just now and it's really not interesting anyway.
So, back to the question: can I fuk witchu a bit here? Of course, it goes both ways as I'm always keen on a laugh at my own expense. :D
damn... I'm probably already dead just by asking (and mabe a little pre-emptive fuking with). If so, someone please avenge me, but not with geese! :p
EDIT: and i was loco in the coco before getting the vacscene so it aint what did it! It's a safe, fun vacscene. Some would even say exciting. :D

I don't really care about what his dad had. I typed it out so nobody would think GB isn't a very serious condition or that some people can get over it in a couple of days.
I put in the details on diagnostic testing and pathophysiology to show why some stranger on the internet could be so certain the diagnosis some guy's dad got from his actual doctor was wrong. Sorry if the tone came off as being an a$$hole. Appreciate the feedback and I'll try to watch that. (Also, I'm pretty sure I repped his post before replying and said why I replied. It's been a few days so not 100%sure)
