One year off and on progress. Took the first picture @ 225, almost immediately hurt my back again and was out for two-four months riding straight into the holidays and then 'Rona.... been a rough ride. I was about 230 in May and my gym opened back up and i got motivated. Eating ~1700 daily. Two to five times a week in the gym doing mostly lifting and some LISS cardio depending on work schedule. Woke up at 217. My 1RM on bench in January was ~185 and I'm finally back to where I was in 2013 @ ~240 1RM.

Wild ride. Here's now and one year ago.

You're pretty generous, he lacks muscle but still has a lot of fat, I'd still say he's over 20%.

Sorry for posting something unrelated to current discussion, but I could really use your help!

I am a PhD candidate at Western Sydney University. For my PhD project, I am developing a new body image questionnaire. For this purpose I am conducting online interviews via Zoom teleconferencing with males who currently have OR previously had either:
a) eating/body image concerns;
b) disordered eating;
OR
c) eating disorder or muscle dysmorphia diagnosis

The topic of the interview is body image and participants will be asked questions about experience with their own body, thoughts, emotions, and beliefs about one's weight and shape. During the interview, participants do not have to use the Zoom video. The interview will last no more than one hour and you will be reimbursed with $50 AUD giftcard.

This study has been approved by the University's ethics committee board. If you are under the age of 18, you will be given a parental information sheet and parental informed consent (in addition to participant information sheet and participant informed consent) which must be signed on-screen before participation.

You are the definition of "Skinny-fat" at the moment and should focus more on adding muscle than losing the fat.

Since you are posing and flexing in both pictures it will make you look leaner than you really are so basically that leads to a wide range of guessing.

I’m no expert so I’m not going to give you a bodyfat estimate. Others will chime in on that.

You should be eating till satisfied at a minimum and lifting. No need to be cutting son

At your age that’s a very normal thing. At any age it is (talking about body image)

Build muscle - Yes - will do your physique good :)

Imo you’re not atall fat. Just lack muscle.

Hi all! I am wondering if I should cut or bulk. I bought a weighing scale and it showed that I started with around 20% body fat like 4 months ago weighing 86.5 kg. Now im down to 18,3% as I went on and off with cutting or eating on maintenance, so it went kind of slow. However, it is still nowhere near the 15% which is recommended everywhere on the internet before stopping with cutting.

I never had any kind of workout schedule or diet but I've been going to the gym on and off for fun with mates the last 2 - 3 years. Did not do much sporting this year unfortunately, but I finally started to go to the gym again (this time with proper planning and diet) and go 3 times a week following a full body workout routine for the last 2 months now which I intend to keep doing as I can already see big results in my strength and physique.

Anyways, I was wondering if my weighing scale is accurate with the 18,3% body fat? My goal is to hit around 15%.
So my question is: Should I cut or Bulk?

To be fair to your scale, 18% seems about right

You could do either, Personally I would still try and drop down to 15% or below before I would start gaining but when I did I would gain for a looooooong time

I would concur that 18% or so is probably pretty close, you can't yet see the outline of your core. I would cut another 6-7kg and then start a long slow lean bulk.

You see the problem is that fat, isn’t just the inch you can pinch known as subcutaneous fat the real danger is the fat that’s in your abdomen and surrounding your internal organs known as visceral fat. Studies have shown visceral fat puts us at higher risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and in women it’s even shown to increase the risk of breast cancer.
