No visible abs and I still have a decent bit of fat I can grab. Are you sure I should bulk? I feel like I will just get fatter
No visible abs and I still have a decent bit of fat I can grab. Are you sure I should bulk? I feel like I will just get fatter
That is because you lbm is too low for visible abs to worth your while. You would need to go into single figure body fat to see them and even then you will just seem very skinny. If you lean bulk with a small surplus of 200-300 calories over your maintenance then you will add very little fat as long as you follow a progressive proven weight training program (see workout stickies for advice). You will look a lot better then getting really skinny for abs.
Remember abs are only one part of the whole picture anyone can starve to get abs, not everyone can build abs to appear along with a good overall physique I would focus on that more IMHO.

Hi
What would be my body fat percentage??
Age 35
Working out since 3 months
height: 5 feet 4 1/2 inches (165 cms)
Weight: 71.5 kgs (157 pounds)
chest: 38
belly :38
arms: 12
Its only three months that I have started working out and I feel my muscles have gained but my belly isn't reducing.Since beginning, I have been eating around my maintenance calories and have been focusing on heavy lifting.Since 1 week, I tried bulking with 500 calories surplus and by belly shot up even more than before. In this scenario I am confused if I Should bulk/cut/recompose
How about my bf % now? I've cut a fair bit, now 118lbs at 171cm. Lifts have gone up during the cut, but only by a couple of kg in most cases.
https: //imgur.com/a/ORPlikm
Do you all think cutting 4lbs more should see me at 10%?

Stop cutting. You are about 10% just bulk now. Your BMI is unhealthy.
Age : 41
Height : 169cm
Currently : 165lbs
so I did my cut from 216 down to 142, I have a month or so left of my bulk, tried really hard to stick to 2lbs but averaged just under 3lbs. This was last month at around 163lbs.
After my cut my lower belly was sagging quite a bit, now not as much but I think it could be because I have filled up with a bit more fat/water stores !!
Can I get a % BF estimate. I think when I get to 168lbs I will cut. What do you think ?
For some reason the picture appears sideways !

Looking good I have you around 14-15%, still obvious core development and noticeable upper abs visible as well as veins on the arm and V shape. Good lean bulk I would say, that sounds good will probably push you in the range of 15-16% fat so a good time to cut down a bit then repeat. Well done.

He is about 12% although he does have a higher level of lbm. So you will need to cut down to around 12-14% then lean bulk to build more muscle then cut again however is achievable with dedication and patience. One step at a time lower your body fat down to below 15% and reassess.

You are at about 15% you could do either really. If you are a beginner at weight lifting you could try a body recomp, you might be able to build muscle and lose fat.

Anyone else want to chime in on this too? So I am around 17-18% bodyfat or does this seem off to some of you? I plan on continueing to cut to 150 then lean bulk to 160 and repeat. Nope the bulking one I would say. Doesn't matter if you are bulking generally people above 15% don't have the visible outline of their core unless they have massive cores (powerlifters and strongmen). Likewise the previous pic is around 12% as your ribs and collarbone are showing not something 15% individuals usually see. At 20% generally your waist is similar size to your back which yours is not (again unless someone has a massive amount of lbm).
I am a very novice level lifter, I’ve only just recently committed myself to sticking to a routine and a more healthy diet. Definitely not enough time to have any noticeable results to people other than myself.
So this is pretty much me at starting level. Just curious about what percentage body fat I’m at so I can figure out which direction I need to go.
I know the estimates can only be derived from educated guesses and will probably be a little off, but I’m sure someone with more experience than myself can guess a lot closer than I could. My picture will be on my profile because I couldn’t figure out how to post it here lol I can also take more pictures from different angles if need be.
Stats: My Height is 5’10” I’m 24yrs old and weighed in at 178lbs this morning.
Stats
Height: 5'10 (178 cm)
Weight: 175 lbs (79.5 kg)
I'm taking a 7 day break from the gym due to traveling in which I'm eating at maintenance, after which I'm starting to cut. Photos are done with no pump, mirror doesn't reach down to my legs but they are by far my biggest bodypart both in size terms and fat storage (I store more fat in glutes/legs).
Opinions on %? Also, I never train abs.
Cheers.

About 13%. Does seem like you will need to go quite low you have visible hips but minimal abs (seems like most of your fat is on your waist). So yes probably would be best to gain some more muscle before cutting too much further. Focus on your major lifts + some weighted ab exercises during your bulk and that should bring out your abs for the next cut.

I generally don't work by weight I work by the mirror and bf%. I would just keep bulking until I lose a good portion of my leanness and if you do it slow enough this can take 6-12 months. Don't worry about your weight too much as in a max/ minimum, use weight as a tool to measure your progress aim to add 2-3lbs a month and this should be a good portion of lbm. I always focus on doing lean bulks as 'dirty' bulks only add fat and I hate cutting.
Can you estimate mine please?I have to know, and I should start bulking or keep cutting.

12-13% is a good shout. You are certainly lean enough for a long and slow lean bulk, I highly recommend you start one. If you have been on a cut for a long time it might be a good idea to up calories just below maintenance for a couple of week just to balance out any hormonal changes. After that up calories 200-300 above maintenance and aim to gain 2-3lbs max a month. Good work.

I have you around 14-15% body fat. You will probably need to be near 9-10% to have a visible abs maybe lower for all six unflexed.

No problem as always its only a best guess not science. Doesn't really matter at the end of the day just judge your progress by the mirror and who cares what bf% you or anyone is as long as they have the physique you/they want. Good luck on your cut you have a good amount of lbm to support a lean look.

M, 19, 147lbs. I'm almost 4 months into my bulk (started at 135, got an estimate at around 14% then). I was looking to get a status update just to keep track of my progress. I've pretty consistently gained a little less than a lb a week.

Am I gaining too fast/should lower my surplus a bit? Or am I fine to keep bulking at this rate until about Spring when I plan on starting to cut again.
Thanks in advance!

You are probably going a tad fast that is 4lbs a month nearly I would aim more for 2lbs a month. You still have good core showing, so you can carry on bulking just go a tad slower.

Age: 20

Hi guys! I've been cutting for more than 7 months now (dropped down from 229lbs), and I'm almost reaching my goal weight (≈ 170lbs).
While being very happy with my actual weight, my body fat isn't what I was hoping for. I'm pretty skinny fat at this point, and I don't know what to do.
I estimate my body fat to be around 20-21%.
I started my weight loss journey at 229lbs, and the first 4 months I had been drastically reducing my calories (I never got below 1000 kcal a day though).
After the first 4 months, I realised I was doing something wrong and I started taking nutrition very seriously, counting every calorie and macro. I was hovering around 2000 calories a day (150 grams of protein, 65grams of fat, 200grams of carbs), aiming for a weight loss of 1,5-1,8lbs/week. A month after that I started going to the gym 3 times a week, and it has been 2 months now I'm consistent with exercising and 3 months with nutrition.
Right now I'm still at 2000 calories a day (same macros as before), aiming for a weight loss of 1,2-1,5 lbs/week.
I wanted to cut to 12-13%, but I think I would need to go below 155lbs and look very skinny. So my plan right now is to cut to 165lbs (probably ≈17% body fat), lean bulk for a few months, and then cut again.
Is this a great plan? And do you think I really am around 20-21% body fat?
Thanks a lot :)
5'7" 177. Five years of working out; the last three years are something like this eight months of dirty bulking/lifting in high school, followed by a three year distance runner phase, and now after about 6 months of not doing any exercise I started lifting and doing 25min. of jogging or video workout/cardio a day. I'm stronger than I was as a runner, but not as strong than when I lifted in high school. I have a 35.9in waist, but my core muscles aren't that well developed so they wouldn't account for any significant waist increase.
Legs not pictured, but I have legs pumped/flexed pics on my Bodyspace, and for those who don't want to bother with that I'll just say that I have ran the mile in 5 minutes, can do single-leg squats with 30lb pair of dumbells, and wearing shorts make my thighs look super huge and calves look tiny :)
My guess?
18 -19%
@yonsandaime There's definitely some muscular development going on. Good job :) I'd say an honest 25%. This isn't the thread to be asking for fat loss advice, but my best advice is to keep on going, but maybe really scrutinize what your weight loss:calorie deficit relationship is and see if your predicted calorie deficit is congruent with how much you're losing each week. You might find you're over-deficiting and can probably eat more :). Marcos look fine; keep getting stronger, do 20min. of heart healthy cardio 3-7 days a week if you can, and be patient. It's worth it and thanks for sharing. If health is your primary concern, then I'd just cut till you have a waist line that's half your height and recomp from there.

Curious to what my percentage could be. 5'5" @ 125.6 lbs
Looking to get my estimated BF% before starting my bulk. I believe i’m looking pretty lean & at this point noticing at this body fat, would look great if i had more size. For reference, i’m 5’4” now 128lbs. So being you guys and gals deem me lean enough, i’ll start my first bulk. From 155-128. Been on a 1100-1600 calorie cut (calorie cycling) for about 4 1/2 months running 3 miles 7 days a week and even at this, it is almost impossible for me to lose any more weight, basically just maintaining at this point. Let me know what you guys think, thanks!
Edit: pictures are in my bodyspace, if you could take a look. Bodybuilding won’t let me upload yet bc of my amount of points.
