Body Fat %
Hi Guys,
Just looking to get an estimate of where I am BF% wise to compare to the calipers. I included a before picture if you could estimate that one to.
Started March 2018
Picture 0
Weight 203
Height 5'10"
BF% estimate by calipers was around 27%
Current
Picture 1 and 2
Weight 196.6
BF% estimate by calipers around 16.5%
Currently I am trying to cut to 12% by being in a deficit and trying to maintain my lean mass by working out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I think that I am on the right track for what I am looking for. Thanks again.
Hey guys :)
I'm 21 y/o, 172 cm (5'8), 78 kg (171 lbs ~).
I'm a beginner at the gym and my main goal atm is losing some weight while trying to keep or even single out current muscles if possible.
What is your assessment?
thanks :)
About 20-22%. Look at my sig. You could try a recomp as you are new to working out.
imgur(dot)com/a/1h0JnLZ
18 years old, 6 foot and 73KG. I can grab a hefty amount of fat from my chest, abs and love handles I'm guessing that's where I store all my fat. If I had to guess I'd say I'm about 20% body fat.
My first post on this website can't post links..
I say lower more like 15%. You lack lbm that is the reason why your fat amount seems higher to you.

Your bf% estimates are pretty right maybe you higher at 17-18% as you have some loose skin. I say you are making great progress already so you must know what you are doing.
Keep lifting heavier on a progressive training program, whilst aiming for 1-2lbs lose per week. Find the weight thing a tad odd you only lost 6lbs and made that much visual difference (I think a typo).

I kinda wondered that myself but thats not a typo. I kept weekly logs of weight and caliper testing to track progress. Doesn't seem right that I have not lost that much weight overall.

Thanks for your answer.
I was wondering, since I started on with a cut :
a> Don't you think atm a cut is better than recomp? since my weight is like 6 kgs above height, bmi says overweight, I mean isn't it better to cut some weight before recomp?
b> Working out at the gym doing a cut, but I'm a beginner in the gym. Do the exercises have any benefit? since I don't have a big muscle mass to reserve. Is it worthy in addition to the nutrition?

Happy with my weight (original goal was 140 but if I decided I really wanted to, I could lose this within 3 weeks), but confused as to where I should continue. I don't want to be big but I would like more definition everywhere.
What I am certain of though besides aesthetics is that I would like to become stronger. I know that for bigger people usually they are stronger, but what I would like is strength for a pound-to-pound basis.

A) As you are overweight you can possible utilize the excess fat as energy which with adequate protein can be used to develop muscle. Especially as you have no experience of weight training it is best to use a progressive training program (like beginner fierce 5, all pros or 5x5 starting strength) and have a small deficit (between 200/300) by doing this you can utilize your 'newbie gains'. When you cut you don't have a the same benefits of 'newbie gains'.
B) You should always weight training (unless you are clinical obese and are unable to do so). Its not just the case of reserving muscle mass which is important, during a cut/ recomp you can get stronger, improve form, better health and even gain a little bit of muscle through newbie gains. Nutrition and diet is of course the most important thing when losing weight, however for body composition weight training is essential.

About 17% having your arms up may have stretched some of the fat but it will be close to 17% anyway.

Well body fat % is about 15-16%. Generally you are right the bigger you are the stronger you are for natural individuals anyway. However strength does have lots of factors such as form, nerve response, mind to muscle function and loads more. For more in depth advice I would post of the workout program section.
However from my experience to increase strength it is best to focus on a medium volume training program such as Starting Strength 5x5, madcow, 5/3/1 and aim to hit PR at regular opportunity. Although not essential it is best to increase strength when on a lean bulk, it is possible on a cut but generally at some point you will stall. If you focus on your major lifts (squats, bench, OHP and deadlifts) with a progressive program and small surplus of calories you will gain strength quite quick and will build good amounts of lbm as well.
See this sticky for more advice on the comparisons of strength vs size training they are actually very similar:-

(reposting this here bc I was told to)
Hey all, just looking for some confirmation. This year I lost about 26 pounds of mostly fat, managing to hold onto most of the little muscle I previously had, and now I feel like I should be bulking, but I’m too afraid to do so. My question is: Am I within the 8-10% or 10-12% body fat range?
I feel like, considering my height, weight, frame size, the overall leanness on my arms, face and considering the vascularity on my lower abs and arms, that estimate sounds about right. However, I’d like a few more opinions on the matter, before I set course at any direction (either bulking or cutting further).
My stats are: 6’2 almost 6’3 (1,91 cm), about 174lbs (79kgs). My chest is at 38,5 inches (98cm) and my shoulders are at 43 inches (110 cm) circumference and ~20 inches (50 cm) in width. My waist, at the narrowest point, just above the navel, measures 30 inches (76,5cm), my wrist is at 8,2 inches (21cm).
I have pictures up in my BodySpace, I’m not relaxed in most of them (I’m “flexed”). Thanks in advance, hope ya’ll have a great day!

I say between 10-12%. Doesn't matter either way anyway, you have to bulk now in order to get the physique I imagine you want you have to bulk. I am also 6' 2 and can tell you going too low in weight is not a great look. Lean bulk and add about 2lbs a month and a good portion will be muscle. If you have been cutting for a long time I would recommend a couple weeks at maintenance to calculate your new maintenance TDEE and to balance hormones, then consume 200-300 calories above maintenance TDEE to lean bulk.

About 15%. You are right on the edge of either really so whatever bugs you the most. Although you do have good lbm especially on your pecs so I would think you could get away with going a bit leaner maybe at 12% IMHO. However either way would be fine. If you do go on a bulk take it slow and aim to add maybe 1-2lbs a month max as this will minimize any fat gains and offer the best visual appearance.

Take notice of what was said in your other thread and gain muscle first and foremost.

https://imgur.com/a/OmO669d this is my 10 month transformation and I haven’t really just focused on bulking or cutting etc just eating enough to get my protein in etc but now that I’ve been lifting for a year now should I try and focus more on one thing ? I feel like lately I’ve been getting more fat then muscle or I might be bloated I’m not sure but not sure if I should drop cals if I think I’m getting fatter or what. I’m currently doing 5/3/1 bbb and thinking about adding in a 5th day just for back work would that be alright or do I get enough already? I’m 5’7 160 and my lifts are 220 bench, 125 ohp, 285 squat, 300 dl. Doing 5/3/1 I don’t really ever test my 1rm but I know for sure those are mine for the upper body lifts but Lower body according to calculators after doing my amrap my estimated 1rm for squat would be 300 and do would be 333

I was tipping the scales at around 255lbs just under three years ago before a bit of life reassessment, so I'm relatively pleased with where I'm currently at even if I know I have a little way to go yet (particularly around my lower belly and love handles). Planning to get Christmas out of the way, cutting to around 155lbs before a spot of lean bulking. Sound sensible?

13% about, looking good. You could probably lose a little less then that maybe about 6lbs then start lean bullking as adding some lbm will make your physique look more predominate.

Hi all,
40m here, new to the site so have put 2 pics on my profile.
Weigh in today was 103.0kg (227lbs) but has fluctuated this week between low 102kg and today's so I'd put myself somewhere in the middle.
Been working out for 3 months now, currently on a 3 times a week full body program.
Progress has been slow but a body fat % estimate isn't a bad place to start.

Tad hard to see due to the brightness of the bodyspace pic but I have to agree with the calipers on this one (that is a rarity). As for aiming for 9% be careful that you don't start losing a lot of strength/ muscle as when you get very close and in single figures losing fat becomes very slow and annoying.
