The "Lucky Seven Challenge" at China Blue in Corvallis, Oregon!
ONE HOUR.
7 POUNDS.
7 TYPES OF CHICKEN.
$1,300 JACKPOT.

What a hell of a challenge this was! Just a little bit of a backstory. This challenge features a progressive JACKPOT that increases every single month by $100 every time that it's not completed. This jackpot was won last year by Stephanie Wu who took home $1,500. I was a day away from booking a flight last year before I was informed that the challenge had been completed. Very discouraged, that being said.. When I was informed of the jackpot recently I vowed to take on the challenge. I headed out after class late on Wednesday night and took the 16 hour drive and the rest is history.
The challenge features SEVEN pounds of SEVEN different kinds of chicken.
Here they are, listed in order of the best tasting (in my opinion)
1. Hazelnut - 9/10 (Middle bowl)
2. Mandarin - 8/10
3. Sweet and Sour - 8/10
4. Orange - 7/10
5. General Taos- 7/10
6. Hunan - 5/10
7. Lemon - 3/10
Like I said, I went into this challenge extremely tired, fatigued and without much hunger as I drove 15 hours straight to get up to the restaurant. The chicken came out PIPING HOT. I used ice cubes and a separate plate to cool them down. The breading on the chicken was extra thick and I'd estimate the chicken weighed almost EIGHT pounds (instead of the listed 7 pounds). Since I do not consume meat, I was very nervous about taking down this colossal amount in one sitting. I finished the challenge around the 35 minute mark and took home the $1,300 check and got my picture on the wall!

I will be taking on my last food challenge in Japan on Wednesday at Akebono Steak. There are two options that I can choose from for the challenge: three sets of steak, rice, and salad within 30 min or the same amount of food in under 20 min. If I can eat the three sets in under 30 min, I will get a hundred bucks. If I can do the same in under 20 min, I will get two hundred bucks. Each steak weighs 640g and each serving of rice weighs 400g, so the total weight of the three sets should be around 7lbs. Should I go for the 30 min challenge or the 20 min?

erik since you love game of thrones so much maybe its time to show up beard meets food?

Wrong thread brother.

I finished the meal (which turned out to be more like eight pounds).....but not it under twenty minutes. When the timer went off, I still had a little bit of rice and all of the salad left. Since I had to pay for the meal at that point (and still had some room left), I figured that I'd go ahead and enjoy the rest of the meal. I could have easily completed the thirty minute version of the challenge, but I really wanted to push myself and see what I was capable of. Now I know what I'll have to work on for the Nathan's qualifier: speed!

Looks tasty. 8 pounds huh, that's lot of food.
-
Yeah, it was a pretty tasty challenge. I used to be obese, so my stomach is still stretched to hell from then lol. In addition to that, I drink at least two gallons of water a day and eat loads of vegetables and lean proteins. The largest challenge that I beat so far was a 12.4 lbs bowl of ramen, so my max capacity is around 13-14 lbs. BTW, I liked your egg challenge lol. Cool Hand Luke reference?

Seems like we come from similar backgrounds!
-
I was aware of the fact that you used to suffer from an ED, but I didn't know that you were obese. I guess it's just not a coincidence that many competitive eaters fall in the same boat as us. I've never suffered from an ED, but I've had some relatives who suffered from them. Your recovery is amazing and inspiring to say the least!
-
BTW, do you ever get accused of purging after challenges? People accuse me of it all the time and it makes me laugh! It does get kind of annoying though....
-
Just did another challenge on a whim, since I didn't want to leave Japan a loser! I completed the Mega Turkish Rice challenge, which was a seven pound platter of food that consisted of sausage spaghetti, Turkish rice, curry, and a load of deep-fried goodies. For completing the challenge, I got the meal for free and a t-shirt. Only need one more win for win number ten!

I used to be a bigun as well and go through heads of lettuce daily. However I cannot drink that much water at work because I'm in a lab and it's a pain in the a$$ to have to take everything off and wash my hands coming in and out of the lab constantly.
Therefore not near 13-14 pounds capacity.

Yeah, I've done the heads of lettuce before too for my first few challenges lol. I only prep for my huge challenges with a "max out" meal at a salad bar these days. Here are the pics from the challenge:
-
I just eat them on a regular basis.
I go to Sweet Tomatoes (soup plantation for the uncultured) if I'm going to prep. My wife likes going there so it's a win-win.
-
I've never actually been to a sweet tomato or soup plantation before! They don't have them around where my home town is in Virginia. I'll have to go to one at some point!
-
Trying to line up a sponsorship from them so I can train there for contests, would be really cool!

It's a very simple place. Not like a mega buffet so the overall quality of salad is good. Not liking eating a bunch of wilted chit.

Just completed my last food challenge in Japan on Monday. For this challenge, I had to eat five lbs of fried rice along with a large bowl of Chinese soup. For completing the challenge, I got a bottle of Chinese spirit, a certificate of completion, a spot on their wall of fame, and the meal free! I'm really going to miss this country, but I plan on taking on more food challenges back home in the US (after I get rid of some of this fluff lol). I guess my record of 10-2 isn't too bad considering that I just got into food challenges this past December!

~$4 for the 12 oz boxes here, it sucks.
